Process for the manufacture of liohleelectrode).
It has already been proposed to produce carbon electrodes from natural gas in such a way that the natural gas is subjected to heat splitting in a decomposition vessel. that an intimate mixture of soot

is shaped and fired in a known manner.
It has been found that carbon electrodes can be produced more economically and of even better quality. if you do that in the heat splitting of the natural gas next to that on the walls of the decomposition vessel in solid. The intimate mixture of more or less finely divided carbon and tar-like products obtained in varying amounts depending on the working conditions in a coherent form is not directly molded and pressed, but heated to the extent that it is initially. that the tarry components of the mixture are coked, after which the coked mass in an and

is burned.
When the mixture of carbon and tar-like components is heated to coke, a product is created. which is apparently particularly suitable for the production of electrodes due to its molecular nature. This follows from it. that the porosity of the electrodes produced in the manner described is smaller than that of the previous carbon electrodes, while the fire resistance, durability and resistance to chemical influences are particularly high. This is to be justified. that the carbons used to manufacture electrodes in accordance with this process in relation to natural gas have absolute specific weights of about times.
During the production of the carbon-tar mixture from the natural gas on the walls of the decomposition vessel in solid. Retorted graphite-like coal precipitated in a coherent form has the same valuable properties for the production of electrodes as the just mentioned carbons, and it can be processed separately or together with the coked carbon-tar mixture on electrodes.
It has proven advantageous not to coke the carbon-tar mixture in an inert atmosphere. but in the presence of a hydrocarbon, e.g. B. in a stream of natural gas or methane or the resulting methane-hydrogen mixture in the production of the carbon-tar mixture at a temperature at which the gas or the gas mixture decomposes at least partially and the resulting coal to the coking carbon Tar mixture is deposited. The coking product is then ground and processed on electrodes in a manner known per se.
