Process for the production of white enamels.

As an opacifying agent, tin oxide is usually not melted down with the finished enamel or glaze as a mill additive, which means that the same covering effect can be achieved with much smaller amounts of the opacifying agent. On the other hand, there is the difference that with an addition of, for example, 6% tin oxide to the mill, the full covering effect is only achieved at relatively low stoving temperatures and short duration of the melting process. If the temperature goes beyond about 8500 and the firing time about 3 minutes, this results in a strong decrease in the clouding effect, which does not occur if the much larger amounts of tin oxide (about 25%) required in this case are also melted have been.

This different effect of the tin oxide melted in and the tin oxide as a mill additive is based on the fact that the tin oxide initially dissolves in the melt (colorless) and the clouding effect is brought about by an oversaturation of the solution with tin oxide. On the other hand, according to the inventor's findings, in the case of the addition of smaller amounts of tin oxide to the mill, the precipitated tin borate acts as an opacifying agent: if a glaze free of boric acid is chosen, the covering effect is also retained. The tin borate, however, dissolves colorlessly in the melt at temperatures above 850.

This finding forms the starting point of the present proceedings. Because it was
 EMI1.1
1/2% Sn02 has the same clouding effect as is caused by 6% SnO2 under otherwise the same circumstances without the addition of borate. In this way it allows you to achieve a substantial saving in tin oxide.

The degree of turbidity increases with the amount of tin oxide if the addition of borate is increased accordingly at the same time. Because the tin borate is always the actual opacifier, which evidently arises at the moment of melting and is almost insoluble in borosilicates with a high boric acid content.

PATENT CLAIMS:
1. A process for producing white enamels using tin oxide as a mill additive, characterized in that insoluble borates (in particular Ca (BO)) are added to the enamel or glaze mass on the mill to reduce the amount of tin oxide.
