Abstract

This eye implant may include an accommodative intraocular lens and a number of haptics. The accommodative intraocular lens includes a liquid suspended between two plates or membranes with optical transparency to form a pressure lens that transmits optical energy. Haptics are mechanically coupled to the intraocular lens in order to locate and secure the intraocular lens inside the eye. The intraocular lens obtains accommodation using the ciliary muscles of the eye to vary the superficial curvature of the liquid. The liquid may have a high surface tension and be surrounded by a phobic liquid. The pressure of the ciliary muscles causes fluid to be added or removed from a reservoir. The increase / reduction of the internal pressure of the liquid changes the angle (curvature) of the surface thus changing the optical properties of the lens. When the pressure is released, the liquid returns to the tank. The entire arrangement can be isolated from the inside of the eye by a transparent membrane / lens.
