Abstract
In a process to benefit phosphate rock, a thick suspension with between 30% and 70% by weight of a liquid phase and with a solid phase comprising clay, sand, and phosphate rock is provided. In the process, the suspension is exposed to ultrasonic energy that is released from an ultrasound transducer located within the suspension. The suspension can be exposed to ultrasonic energy for less than 10 seconds. The ultrasonic energy can be produced by a piezoceramic transducer so that it has a resonance frequency within the range between 16kHz and 100kHz. The ultrasonic energy can have an intensity within the range between 0.0001 W / cm3 and approximately 1000 W / cm3. Ultrasonic energy can create cavitation forces within the thick suspension. After exposure to ultrasonic energy, clay and sand separate from phosphate rock, perhaps using an air flotation process and a cyclone process.
