Abstract
A foot operated litter/sanitary disposal bin comprising a container(l) closeable by a cover (2), with a disposal lid (3) at the top , with the disposal lid being displacenble, by a foot operated pedal(4) and a lift lever (5) , to move between open and closed positions. The bin is defined such that the user cannot see the contents of the container(T ), waste scavengers cannot have access to the contents, emission of unpleasant odor is reduced and the contents cannot spill out if the bin is overturned.
Description
FOOT OPERATED LITTER/SANITARY DISPOSAL BIN • This invention relates to a foot operated litter/sanitary disposal bin
It is known for litter bins to comprise an open topped container closed by a io pivoted or unpivoted lid with a handle for lifting the lid. This type of bins have the following disadvantages;(1) They expose their contents to the user.
(2) Waste scavengers have access to the contents easily by lifting up the lid.
(3) The waste spills out if the bin is accidentally overturned.
(4) They emit unpleasant odors.
(5) The user needs a free hand to lift the lid before transferring the waste in to the bin thus making the bin un hygienic especially when the bin is used for sanitary and hospital purposes.
Accordingly it is an object of the present invention to overcome the aforesaid disadvantages. The invention provides a bin designed in such a manner as to permit simple and convenient opening of a disposal lid by a suitable opening mechanism. The bin is also convenient to use and does not constitute a health hazard.
According to the present invention there is provided a litter/sanitary disposal bin comprising a container which is closeable by a cover, the cover having a disposal lid, the disposal lid being displaceable by a suitable opening mechanism, preferably by a foot pedal and lift lever mechanism , to move between open and closed positions.
When the bin is in a closed position, an upper flap overlaps the cover opening thus closing the bin tightly. In the opened position, the bin permits waste to be deposited on the disposal lid while at the same time sealing the cover opening such that the contents of the bin cannot be seen and egress of odor is reduced. With this arrangement of the cover and disposal lid waste scavengers cannot gain'access to the inside of the bin and also the contents cannot spill from the bin if the bin is overturned. After the waste is deposited in the disposal lid, the pedal is released and the disposal lid falls back and the waste slides from the lower flap into the container. The egress of unpleasant odors from the container is reduced by the closely Utting cover and the additional closure provided by the disposal lid.

The invention will now be further described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which;Fig I is a sections view of the bin in a closed position.
io Fig 2 is a mechanism schematic of the bin.
Referring now to the drawings, the foot operated Litter/sanitary disposal bin comprises a coiitainer(l) which may be of any shape but preferably it should be a cuboid or cylindrical . The containerQ) is provided with a grip molded ring around the top for gripping the cover (2) tightly. The cover(2) is made in such a way that it should fit the container (1) with a little force. The cover(2) has a opening to accommodate and suit the disposal lid (3). The disposal lid (3) is provided with an upper flap (3a) and a lower flap (3b).The flaps are at an angle, preferably 450, to each other such that they form a waste collection tray. The upper flap has a lip(10) such that the closed position is defined by said lip(l 0) of the upper flap (3a) making contact with a lip(9) of the cover (2).The disposal lid is provided with means for attaching it to the cover(2). Such means include a pivot (8) or a hinge.
The upper and the lower flaps(3a, 3b) are slightly longer than the cover opening such that the lower flap (3b) is put in the inner part of the cover and the upper flap(3a) rests on top of the cover.
Pivotally mounted (6) at the bottom of the container is a foot pedal(4) which makes a flexible joint (7) with a lift lever (5) on one end. The lower so flap(3b) of the disposal lid is provided with an abutment through which the lift lever(5) makes contact with to the lower flap.

i* . -With reference lo fig 2 when the unit is in a flee position, the disposal lid (3) is at position x thus closing the cover opening. Lift lever (5) is at position y and the foot lever at position z. When the foot pedal (4) is stepped on, it moves to position z' and pushes the lift lever to position y' and eventually the disposal lid(3) is displaced to position x' , thus making a disposal tray for the waste to be disposed in. In this position the lower flap(3b) seals the cover opening. When.the pedal(4 ) is released, the whole system falls back to position. The pivot(6) of the foot pedal is placed such that the whole mechanism is biased towards the closed position and in addition provides a force to maintain it in the closed position.
