Abstract
Description
日差しの強い屋外等の環境では、眩しさを軽減するために偏光機能を備えたサングラス(以下、「偏光サングラス」と称する。)をかけた状態で表示装置を観察する場合がある。
前記問題を解決するために、特許文献1の手段が提案されている。
また、特許文献1では、バックライト光源として白色発光ダイオード(白色LED)を用いた液晶表示装置において、リタデーション値に特有の干渉ムラを防止している。
これら近年の表示装置を偏光サングラスを通して観察した場合、前記問題(ブラックアウト及び干渉ムラ)を生じなくても、色の再現性に問題を生じる場合があった。
そして、本発明者らはさらに検討した結果、色域が広い表示装置における色の再現性の問題は、光源の分光スペクトルを考慮したのみでは解消できず、表示素子の分光スペクトルを考慮することが必要となることを見出し、前記問題を解決するに至った。
[1]表示素子の光出射面側の面上に、偏光子a及び光学フィルムXを有し、下記条件1-1及び条件2-1を満たす表示装置。
<条件1-1>
前記光学フィルムXに表示素子側から入射する光のうち、前記光学フィルムXに対して垂直方向に入射する光をL1とする。前記L1の強度を1nmごとに測定する。青の波長域を400nm以上500nm未満、緑の波長域を500nm以上600nm未満、赤の波長域を600nm以上780nm以下とする。前記L1の青の波長域の最大強度をBmax、前記L1の緑の波長域の最大強度をGmax、前記L1の赤の波長域の最大強度をRmaxとする。
前記Bmaxを示す波長をL1λB、前記Gmaxを示す波長をL1λG、前記Rmaxを示す波長をL1λRとする。
前記Bmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λBのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を+αB、前記Gmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λGのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を-αG、前記Gmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λGのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を+αG、前記Rmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λRのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を-αRとする。

前記光学フィルムXの光出射面側から光学フィルムXの垂直方向に出光する光であって、前記偏光子aの吸収軸と平行な吸収軸を有する偏光子bを通過した光をL2とする。前記L2の強度を1nmごとに測定する。前記L2の分光スペクトルの傾きが負から正に変化する波長をボトム波長、前記L2の分光スペクトルの傾きが正から負に切り替わる波長をピーク波長とする。
前記Rmaxの1/3以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λRのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を-βR、前記Rmaxの1/3以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λRのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を+βR、前記Gmaxの1/3以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λGのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を-βG、前記Rmaxの1/3以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λGのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を+βG、前記Bmaxの1/3以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λBのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を-βB、前記Rmaxの1/3以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λBのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を+βBとする。

[表示装置]
本発明の表示装置は、表示素子の光出射面側の面上に、偏光子a及び光学フィルムXを有し、下記条件1-1及び条件2-1を満たすものである。
前記光学フィルムXに表示素子側から入射する光のうち、前記光学フィルムXに対して垂直方向に入射する光をL1とする。前記L1の強度を1nmごとに測定する。青の波長域を400nm以上500nm未満、緑の波長域を500nm以上600nm未満、赤の波長域を600nm以上780nm以下とする。前記L1の青の波長域の最大強度をBmax、前記L1の緑の波長域の最大強度をGmax、前記L1の赤の波長域の最大強度をRmaxとする。
前記Bmaxを示す波長をL1λB、前記Gmaxを示す波長をL1λG、前記Rmaxを示す波長をL1λRとする。
前記Bmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λBのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を+αB、前記Gmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λGのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を-αG、前記Gmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λGのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を+αG、前記Rmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λRのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を-αRとする。

前記Rβ、前記Gβ、及び前記Bβのそれぞれの波長域に、前記ボトム波長及び前記ピーク波長をそれぞれ一以上有する。
なお、図1では、その他の光学フィルム(30)を、偏光子a(40)と光学フィルムX(20)との間に配置しているが、その他の光学フィルム(30)の配置箇所は、表示素子と偏光子aとの間や、光学フィルムXよりも観察者側であってもよい。また、表示装置の表示素子が液晶表示素子である場合、液晶表示素子の背面には図示しないバックライトが必要である。
条件1-1は、表示装置のRGB(赤、緑、青)の分光スペクトルがシャープであることを示す条件である。条件1-1について、図を引用してより具体的に説明する。
図2中、Bmaxは青の波長域(400nm以上500nm未満)における最大強度、Gmaxは緑の波長域(500nm以上600nm未満)における最大強度、Rmaxは赤の波長域(600nm以上780nm以下)における最大強度を示している。
また、図2中、L1λBはBmaxを示す波長、L1λGはGmaxを示す波長、L1λRはRmaxを示す波長を示している。
また、図2中、+αBは、Bmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λBのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を示している。-αGは、Gmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λGのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を示している。+αGは、Gmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λGのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を示している。-αRは、Rmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λRのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を示している。
図2の分光スペクトルはRGBのスペクトルがいずれもシャープであり、L1λB、L1λG、L1λR、+αB、-αG、+αG及び-αRが、以下(1)~(4)の関係を満たしている。

RGBの三色の混合によって再現できる色域は、CIE-xy色度図上の三角形で示される。前記三角形は、RGB各色の頂点座標を定め、各頂点を結ぶことにより形成される。
RGBの分光スペクトルがそれぞれシャープであると、CIE-xy色度図において、Rの頂点座標はxの値が大きくyの値が小さくなり、Gの頂点座標はxの値が小さくyの値が大きくなり、Bの頂点座標はxの値が小さくyの値が小さくなる。つまり、RGBの分光スペクトルがそれぞれシャープであると、CIE-xy色度図においてRGB各色の頂点座標を結んだ三角形の面積が大きくなり、再現できる色域の幅が広くなる。なお、色域の幅が広くなることは、動画の迫力、臨場感の向上につながる。
色域を表す規格としては、「ITU-R勧告 BT.2020(以下、「BT.2020」と称する。)」等が挙げられる。ITU-Rは、「International Telecommunication Union - Radiocommunication Sector(国際電気通信連合 無線通信部門)」の略称であり、ITU-R勧告 BT.2020は、スーパーハイビジョンの色域の国際規格である。下記式で表されるCIE-xy色度図に基づくBT.2020のカバー率が後述する範囲であると、動画の迫力及び臨場感を向上しやすくできる。

条件1-1を満たすような色域が広い表示装置においては、偏光サングラスを通して画像を観察した場合に、色の再現性の問題を生じやすい。この原因は、光学フィルムのリタデーション値と、複屈折率の波長依存性の影響により、波長が大きくなるにつれてL2の分光スペクトルの強度の変化の周期が大きくなるためと考えられる。
図6~9は、図2~5の分光スペクトルを有するL1をリタデーション値:11,000nmの光学フィルムに入射させ、光学フィルムの光出射面側から光学フィルムの垂直方向に出光する光であって、偏光子aの吸収軸と平行な吸収軸を有する偏光子bを通過した光(L2)の分光スペクトルである。L2の分光スペクトルは、偏光サングラスを通して視認される分光スペクトルとみなすことができる。図6~9のL2の分光スペクトルを見ると、波長が大きくなるにつれて、L2の分光スペクトルの強度の変化の周期が大きくなっている。なお、図6~9のL2の分光スペクトルは、L1の分光スペクトルの最大強度を100として各波長の強度を規格化したものである。また、図6~9のL2はP偏光(光学フィルムXに対して鉛直方向の偏光)の光である。
図12のL1は条件1-1を満たさないものである。図12では、L1の分光スペクトルの中に、L2の分光スペクトルの多くが入り込んでいる。つまり、図12のように、L1の分光スペクトルがシャープでないものは、色域は狭いものの、L1の分光スペクトル及びL2の分光スペクトルに大きな差が生じにくいため、色の再現性の問題が生じにくい。
一方、図10、図11及び図13のように、L1の分光スペクトルがシャープであるものは、L1の分光スペクトルの中に、L2の分光スペクトルが入り込みにくくなり、色の再現性の問題が生じやすい。特に、赤(R)の波長域において、L1の分光スペクトルの中に、L2の分光スペクトルが入り込みにくくなる。この原因は、光学フィルムのリタデーション値、及び複屈折率の波長依存性等の影響により、L2の分光スペクトルの強度の変化の周期が波長の増加に伴い大きくなるためである。
また、BT.2020のカバー率を算出する際に必要となる「L1のCIE-xy色度図の面積」は、赤(R)表示、緑(G)表示、及び青(B)表示の際のCIE-Yxy表色系のx値及びy値をそれぞれ測定し、該測定結果から得られた「赤(R)の頂点座標」、「緑(G)の頂点座標」及び「青(B)の頂点座標」から算出できる。CIE-Yxy表色系のx値及びy値は、例えば、コニカミノルタ社製の分光放射輝度計CS-2000で測定できる。
条件2-1は、色の再現性の問題を生じさせないための条件を示している。
なお、条件2-1において、「偏光子b」は、実質的に「偏光サングラスの偏光子」を意図したものである。つまり、条件2において、「光学フィルムXの垂直方向に出光する光であって、偏光子aの吸収軸と平行な吸収軸を有する偏光子bを通過した光(L2)」とは、「光学フィルムXの垂直方向に出光する光であって、偏光サングラスの偏光子を通過した光(偏光サングラスを通して人間が視認する光)」を意図している。
また、条件2-1において、「-βR以上+βR以下の波長域であって、かつ600nm以上780nm以下の波長域」と規定しているのは、600nm未満又は780nm超の波長域については、-βR以上+βR以下の波長域であっても、ボトム波長及びピーク波長をカウントしないことを意味している。同様に、条件2-1においては、500nm未満又は600nm以上の波長域については、-βG以上+βG以下の波長域であっても、ボトム波長及びピーク波長をカウントせず、400nm未満又は500nm以上の波長域については、-βB以上+βB以下の波長域であっても、ボトム波長及びピーク波長をカウントしない。
図10中、-βR、+βR、-βG、+βG、-βB、+βBは以下の波長を示している。
-βR:Rmaxの1/3以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λRのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長

なお、Rβ、Gβ、及びBβは以下の波長を示している。

Bβ:-βB以上+βB以下の波長域であって、かつ400nm以上500nm未満の波長域
一方、条件2-1を満たさないことは、上記(i)~(iii)の少なくとも何れかの条件を満たさないことを意味している。このため、条件2-1を満たさない場合、色の再現性が低下してしまう。
上記(i)~(iii)の中では、上記(i)を満たすことが最も難しい。これは、リタデーションの波長分散性により、波長が長くなるにつれて分光スペクトルの周期が長くなるためである。このため、L1の分光スペクトルがシャープである場合、通常の設計では、L1の赤(R)の最大強度近傍の山の中にL2の赤(R)の波長域の山が1つ以上入れることができず、条件2-1を満たすことができない。つまり、L1の分光スペクトルがシャープである場合、通常の設計では、条件2-1を満たすことができず、色の再現性が低下してしまう。本発明は、リタデーションの波長分散性(特に、複屈折率の波長依存性が影響したリタデーションの波長分散性)を考慮して、色の再現性の低下の抑制を可能としたものである。
なお、従来主流であったバックライトの光源として白色LEDを用いた液晶表示装置は、図4に示すようにL1の赤(R)の分光スペクトルがブロードであるため、L1の赤(R)の最大強度近傍の山の中に、L2の赤(R)の波長域の山が容易に入ることができる。つまり、偏光サングラスを通して観察した際の色の再現性の低下は、従来の主流であった白色LEDを用いた液晶表示装置では起こりえない課題である。
前記Rmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λRのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を-αR、前記Rmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λRのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を+αR、前記Gmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λGのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を-αG、前記Rmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λGのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を+αG、前記Bmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λBのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を-αB、前記Rmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λBのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を+αBとする。
-αR以上+αR以下の波長域であって、かつ600nm以上780nm以下の波長域をRα、-αG以上+αG以下の波長域であって、かつ500nm以上600nm未満の波長域をGα、-αB以上+αB以下の波長域であって、かつ400nm以上500nm未満の波長域をBαとする。
前記Rα、前記Gα、及び前記Bαのそれぞれの波長域に、前記L2のボトム波長及び前記L2のピーク波長をそれぞれ一以上有する。
上述したように、本発明の表示装置は、条件1-1(L1の分光スペクトルがシャープ)を満たすために、通常の設計では色の再現性に問題を生じやすいものの、条件2-1を満たすことによって、色の再現性の問題を抑制している。
また、本発明の表示装置は、L1の分光スペクトルが極めてシャープであっても、条件2-1を満たせば色の再現性の問題を抑制することができる。近年、色域を広げるため、L1の分光スペクトルが極めてシャープとなる表示装置の開発が進められている。本発明の表示装置は、L1の分光スペクトルが極めてシャープである表示装置においても、色の再現性の問題を抑制できる点で好適である。
例えば、本発明の表示装置は、L1の分光スペクトルが以下の条件1-2~条件1-5の一以上を満たす表示装置(L1の分光スペクトルが極めてシャープであり、色域が極めて広い表示装置)に対して、色の再現性の問題を抑制できる点で好適である。条件1-1~1-4は主として色純度を高めることによる色域の拡大、条件1-5は主として明るさを考慮した色域の拡大に寄与している。
なお、条件1-2を満たすことで、干渉ムラも抑制しやすくなる。
条件1-1の測定で得たL1の分光スペクトルに基づき、青の波長域における分光スペクトルの強度の平均値BAve、緑の波長域における分光スペクトルの強度の平均値GAve、赤の波長域における分光スペクトルの強度の平均値RAveを算出する。青の波長域においてL1の強度がBAveを連続して超える波長域をBp、緑の波長域においてL1の強度がGAveを連続して超える波長域をGp、赤の波長域においてL1の強度がRAveを連続して超える波長域をRpとする。Bp、Gp及びRpを示す波長域が何れも一つである。
前記+αB、前記-αG、前記+αG及び前記-αRが、以下(5)~(6)の関係を満たす。

同様の観点から、前記+βGと前記-βGとの差[+βG-(-βG)]は、20~80nmであることが好ましく、25~60nmであることがより好ましく、30~55nmであることがさらに好ましい。同様の観点から、前記+βBと前記-βBとの差[+βB-(-βB)]は、15~50nmであることが好ましく、20~40nmであることがより好ましく、20~30nmであることがさらに好ましい。
同様の観点から、前記+αGと前記-αGとの差[+αG-(-αG)]は、10~60nmであることが好ましく、15~50nmであることがより好ましく、20~40nmであることがさらに好ましい。同様の観点から、前記+αBと前記-αBとの差[+αB-(-αB)]は、10~30nmであることが好ましく、15~25nmであることがより好ましく、15~20nmであることがさらに好ましい。
表示素子としては、液晶表示素子、有機EL表示素子、無機EL表示素子、プラズマ表示素子等が挙げられる。なお、液晶表示素子は、タッチパネル機能を素子内に備えたインセルタッチパネル液晶表示素子であってもよい。
これらの表示素子の中でも、三色独立方式の有機EL表示素子は、L1の分光スペクトルがシャープとなりやすく、本発明の効果が有効に発揮されやすい。また、有機EL表示素子は光取り出し効率が課題となっており、光取り出し効率を向上させるために、三色独立方式の有機EL素子にマイクロキャビティ構造が備えられている。このマイクロキャビティ構造を備えた三色独立方式の有機EL素子は、光取り出し効率を向上させればさせるほどL1の分光スペクトルがシャープとなりやすいため、本発明の効果が有効に発揮されやすい。
また、表示素子が液晶表示素子であって、バックライトとして量子ドットを用いた場合も、L1の分光スペクトルがシャープとなりやすく、本発明の効果が有効に発揮されやすい。
偏光子aは、表示素子の出射面上であって、光学フィルムXよりも表示素子側に設置される。
偏光子aとしては、例えば、ヨウ素等により染色し、延伸したポリビニルアルコールフィルム、ポリビニルホルマールフィルム、ポリビニルアセタールフィルム、エチレン-酢酸ビニル共重合体系ケン化フィルム等のシート型偏光子、平行に並べられた多数の金属ワイヤからなるワイヤーグリッド型偏光子、リオトロピック液晶や二色性ゲスト-ホスト材料を塗布した塗布型偏光子、多層薄膜型偏光子等が挙げられる。なお、これらの偏光子aは、透過しない偏光成分を反射する機能を備えた反射型偏光子であってもよい。
偏光子aの両面は、プラスチックフィルム、ガラス等の透明保護板で覆うことが好ましい。透明保護板として、光学フィルムXを用いることも可能である。
表示素子と光学フィルムXとの間に2以上の偏光子を有する場合、表示素子から最も離れた側に位置する偏光子を偏光子aとする。
光学フィルムXは表示素子の光出射面側の面上であって、偏光子aよりも光出射面側に設置される。また、表示装置が複数の偏光子を有する場合、最も光出射面側に位置する偏光子(偏光子a)よりも光出射面側に光学フィルムXを設置する。
表示素子上に複数の光学フィルムを設置する場合、光学フィルムXは、表示素子から最も離れた側(視認者側)に設置することが好ましい。
光学フィルムXに垂直方向に入射するL1の強度を「I0」、光学フィルムXの波長550nmのリタデーション値を「Re550」、[光学フィルムXを構成する材料の波長400~780nmの各波長の複屈折率/光学フィルムXを構成する材料の波長550nmの複屈折率]を「N(λ)」、偏光子aの偏光子の吸収軸(直線偏光の振動方向)と光学フィルムXの遅相軸とがなす角度を「θ」とした場合、光学フィルムXの光出射面側から光学フィルムXの垂直方向に出光する光であって、偏光子aの吸収軸と平行な吸収軸を有する偏光子bを通過した光(L2)の強度であるIは、以下の式(A)で表すことができる。なお、L1は、光学フィルムXより表示素子側に位置する偏光子aを通過した直線偏光であることを前提としている。

光学フィルムXの構成は、上記式(A)を元に決定することができる。具体的には、まず、光学フィルムXを透過する前のL1の分光スペクトルを測定する。次いで、L1の分光スペクトルの測定結果と、上記式(A)とに基づいて、光学フィルムXのリタデーション値に応じたL2の分光スペクトルをシミュレーションする。次いで、L1の分光スペクトルと、シミュレーションで得られたL2の分光スペクトルとを対比し、条件2-1を満たすレタデーションを有する光学フィルムを光学フィルムXとして決定する。このようにして光学フィルムXの構成を決定することにより、光学フィルムXのリタデーションを必要以上に大きくすることなく、色の再現性を良好にすることができる。
なお、偏光子aの偏光子の吸収軸(直線偏光の振動方向)と光学フィルムXの遅相軸とのなす角度θが45度の場合に、Iの値は最大値を示す。このため、θを45度とした下記式(B)により上記シミュレーションを行うことが好ましい。

このため、光学フィルムXとしては、リタデーション値3,000nm以上100,000nm以下の範囲で条件2-1を満たすものを用いることが好ましい。光学フィルムXのリタデーション値は、4,000nm以上30,000nm以下のものがより好ましく、5,000nm以上20,000nm以下のものがさらに好ましく、6,000nm以上15,000nm以下のものがよりさらに好ましく、7,000nm以上12,000nm以下のものが特に好ましい。なお、ここでいうリタデーション値は波長550nmにおけるリタデーション値である。

上記リタデーション値は、例えば、王子計測機器社製の商品名「KOBRA-WR」、「PAM-UHR100」により測定できる。
また、二以上の偏光子を用いて、光学フィルムXの配向軸方向(主軸の方向)を求めた後、二つの軸(配向軸の屈折率、及び配向軸に直交する軸)の屈折率(nx、ny)を、アッベ屈折率計(アタゴ社製 NAR-4T)によって求める。ここで、より大きい屈折率を示す軸を遅相軸と定義する。光学フィルムの厚みdは、例えば、マイクロメーター(商品名:Digimatic Micrometer、ミツトヨ社製)により測定し、単位をnmに換算する。複屈折率(nx-ny)と、フィルムの厚みd(nm)との積より、リタデーションを計算することもできる。
光透過性基材としては、ポリエステルフィルム、ポリカーボネートフィルム、シクロオレフィンポリマーフィルム、アクリルフィルム等のプラスチックフィルムを延伸したものが挙げられる。これらの中でも、複屈折率を大きくしやすいという観点から、ポリエステルフィルム、ポリカーボネートフィルムを延伸したものが好ましい。また、光透過性基材の中でも正分散性(短波長側に向かうにつれて複屈折率が大きくなる性質)を示すものが好ましい。特に、ポリエステルフィルムを延伸したもの(延伸ポリエステルフィルム)は、正分散性が強く、短波長側に向かうにつれて複屈折率が大きくなる(長波長側に向かうにつれて複屈折率が小さくなる)性質を有するため、他のプラスチックフィルムと同等のリタデーション値であっても上記条件2-1を満たしやすくできる点で好適である。言い換えると、光学フィルムXの基材として延伸ポリエステルフィルムを用いた場合、基材の厚みを必要以上に厚くしなくても、上記条件2-1を満たしやすくできる点で好適である。
ポリエステルフィルムとしては、ポリエチレンテレフタレートフィルム(PETフィルム)、ポリエチレンナフタレートフィルム(PENフィルム)等が好適である。
延伸は、縦一軸延伸、テンター延伸、逐次二軸延伸及び同時二軸延伸等が挙げられる。
また、光透過性基材の中でも、機械的強度の観点から、正の複屈折性を示すものが好ましい。正の複屈折性を示す光透過性基材とは、光透過性基材の配向軸方向(主軸の方向)の屈折率n1と、配向軸方向に直交する方向の屈折率n2とが、n1>n2の関係を満たすものを意味する。正の複屈折性を示す光透過性基材としては、PETフィルム、PENフィルム等のポリエステルフィルム、アラミドフィルム等が挙げられる。
本発明の表示装置は、位相差フィルム、ハードコートフィルム、ガスバリアフィルム等のその他の光学フィルムを有していてもよい。なお、その他の光学フィルムは、光学フィルムXよりも表示素子側に設置することが好ましい。
本発明の表示装置は、表示素子と光学フィルムXとの間にタッチパネルを備えたタッチパネル付き表示装置であってもよい。表示素子上の偏光子aとタッチパネルとの位置関係は特に限定されないが、最も光出射面側に位置する偏光子(偏光子a)を、タッチパネルと光学フィルムXとの間に配置させることが好ましい。
タッチパネルとしては、抵抗膜式タッチパネル、静電容量式タッチパネル、インセルタッチパネル、電磁誘導式タッチパネル、光学式タッチパネル及び超音波式タッチパネル等が挙げられる。
表示装置が液晶表示装置の場合、表示素子の背面にはバックライトが配置される。
バックライトとしては、エッジライト型バックライト、直下型バックライトの何れも用いることができる。
バックライトの光源としては、LED、CCFL等が挙げられるが、光源として量子ドットを用いたバックライトは、L1の分光スペクトルがシャープとなりやすく、本発明の効果が有効に発揮されやすい。
一次光源が青に相当する波長の一次光を放出する場合、二次光源である量子ドットは、一次光を吸収して赤に相当する波長の二次光を放出する第1量子ドット、及び一次光を吸収して緑に相当する波長の二次光を放出する第2量子ドットの少なくとも一種を含むことが好ましく、前記第1量子ドット及び前記第2量子ドットの両方を含むことがより好ましい。
量子ドットは、半導体のナノメートルサイズの微粒子であり、量子閉じ込め効果(量子サイズ効果)を生じる材料であれば特に限定されない。
量子ドットは、バックライトを構成する光学フィルム中に含有させればよい。
本発明の表示装置の光学フィルムの選定方法は、表示素子の光出射面側の面上に、偏光子a及び光学フィルムを有する表示装置の光学フィルムの選定方法であって、光学フィルムに入射する光が上記条件1-1を満たす場合に、上記条件2-1を満たす光学フィルムを選定するものである。
(a)条件1-1において測定したL1の分光スペクトルの測定結果と、上記式(A)とに基づいて、光学フィルムXのリタデーション値に応じたL2の分光スペクトルをシミュレーションにより算出する。なお、上記式(A)の代わりに上記式(B)を用いてもよい。
(b)L1の分光スペクトルと、シミュレーションで算出したL2の分光スペクトルとを対比し、条件2-1を満たすレタデーションを有する光学フィルムを光学フィルムXとして選定する。
本発明の表示装置の光学フィルムの選定方法は、L1の分光スペクトルが極めてシャープである場合に特に有効である。具体的には、L1の分光スペクトルが前記条件1-2~1-5を満たす場合、色の再現性の問題はより深刻化するため、本発明の表示装置の光学フィルムの選定方法が極めて有用となる。
ポリエチレンテレフタレートを290℃で溶融して、フィルム形成ダイを通して、シート状に押出し、水冷冷却した回転急冷ドラム上に密着させて冷却し、未延伸フィルムを作製した。この未延伸フィルムを二軸延伸試験装置(東洋精機社)にて、120℃にて1分間予熱した後、120℃で4.0倍固定端一軸延伸して、面内に複屈折性を有する光学フィルムを作製した。この光学フィルムの波長550nmにおける屈折率nx=1.701、ny=1.6015であり、Δn=0.0995であった。
この光学フィルムの膜厚を調整し、以下のリタデーション値(Re)を有する光学フィルムi~viを得た。

分光光度計を用いて、視野角1度として、以下の表示装置A~Eを白表示させた際に、光学フィルムに表示素子側から垂直に入射する光(L1)の強度を1nmごとに測定した。表示装置A~Eにおいて、偏光子aの吸収軸(直線偏光の振動方向)と光学フィルムXの遅相軸とのなす角度は45度としている。また、測定箇所は表示装置の有効表示領域の中心とした。表示装置AのL1の分光スペクトルを図2、表示装置BのL1の分光スペクトルを図3、表示装置CのL1の分光スペクトルを図4、表示装置DのL1の分光スペクトルを図5、表示装置EのL1の分光スペクトルを図14に示す。また、測定結果に基づいて算出した条件1-1~1-5に関する数値を表1に示す。また、条件1-1~1-5を満たすものを「○」、満たさないものを「×」として、併せて表1に示す。
マイクロキャビティ構造を備えた三色独立方式の有機EL表示素子上に、偏光子a及び光学フィルムを有する市販の表示装置。CIE-xy色度図に基づくBT.2020のカバー率:77%。
<表示装置B>
表示素子がカラーフィルター付きの液晶表示素子であり、バックライトの光源が冷陰極蛍光管(CCFL)であり、表示素子上に偏光子a及び光学フィルムを有する市販の表示装置。
<表示装置C>
表示素子がカラーフィルター付きの液晶表示素子であり、バックライトの光源が白色LEDであり、表示素子上に偏光子a及び光学フィルムを有する市販の表示装置。CIE-xy色度図に基づくBT.2020のカバー率:49%。
<表示装置D(量子ドットを用いた表示装置1)>
表示素子がカラーフィルター付きの液晶表示素子であり、バックライトの一次光源が青色LEDであり、二次光源が量子ドットであり、表示素子上に偏光子a及び光学フィルムを有する市販の表示装置。CIE-xy色度図に基づくBT.2020のカバー率:68%。
<表示装置E(量子ドットを用いた表示装置2)>
表示素子がカラーフィルター付きの液晶表示素子であり、バックライトの一次光源が青色LEDであり、二次光源が量子ドットであり、表示素子上に偏光子a及び光学フィルムを有する市販の表示装置。CIE-xy色度図に基づくBT.2020のカバー率:52%。
表示装置A~Eの光学フィルムとして、光学フィルムi~viiを配置して、表示装置A-i~A-vii、表示装置B-i~B-vii、表示装置C-i~C-vii、表示装置D-i~D-vii及び表示装置E-i~E-viiを得た。
上記2で測定したL1の分光スペクトルと、上記式(B)とを元に、表示装置A-i~A-vii、表示装置B-i~B-vii、表示装置C-i~C-vii、表示装置D-i~D-vii及び表示装置E-i~E-viiの光学フィルムの光出射面側から光学フィルムの垂直方向に出光する光であって、偏光子aの吸収軸と平行な吸収軸を有する偏光子bを通過した光(L2)の強度であるIをシミュレーションにより算出した。シミュレーション結果に基づいて算出した条件2-1及び2-2に関する数値を表2~6に示す。また、条件2-1及び2-2を満たすものを「○」、満たさないものを「×」として、併せて表2~6に示す。
なお、シミュレーションにより算出した条件2-1及び2-2に関する数値を実測値に基づき算出したところ、同様の結果が得られた。
以下のように、表示装置A-i~A-vii、表示装置B-i~B-vii、表示装置C-i~C-vii、表示装置D-i~D-vii及び表示装置E-i~E-viiを評価した。結果を表2~表6に示す。
表示装置の画面を白表示もしくは略白表示にした。偏光サングラスを介して様々な角度から画面を観察し、画面が暗くなる箇所があるかどうかを目視で評価した。
A:画面が暗くなる箇所がない。
C:画面が暗くなる箇所がある。
表示装置の画面をカラー表示にした。偏光サングラスをかけた状態(状態1)、及び偏光サングラスを外して画面上に偏光サングラスと同色に染色したガラス板を設置した状態(状態2)で、それぞれ正面から画面を観察し、偏光サングラスをかけた状態の色の再現性を目視で評価した。
状態1と状態2との色の差が気にならないものを2点、状態1と状態2との色の差が若干気になるものを1点、状態1と状態2との色の差がひどく気になるものを0点として、20人が評価を行い、平均点を算出した。
AA:平均点が1.7点以上
A:平均点が1.5点以上1.7点未満
B:平均点が1.0点以上1.5点未満
C:平均点が1.0点未満
表示装置の画面をカラーの動画表示にして、偏光サングラスを外した状態で画面を観察し、動画の臨場感を目視で評価した。
A:臨場感を強く感じる。
B:臨場感を感じる。
C:臨場感が物足りない。
また、条件1-1及び条件2-1を満たす表示装置の中でも、さらに条件1-2~1~5を満たすとともに、CIE-xy色度図に基づくBT.2020のカバー率が60%以上である表示装置(表示装置A-iv~A-vii、D-ii~D-vii)は、動画の臨場感がより優れるものであった。
また、条件1-1及び条件2-1を満たす表示装置の中でも、さらに条件2-2を満たす表示装置(表示装置A-iv~A-vii、D-iii~D-vii、E-iv~E-vii)は、色の再現性がより優れるものであった。その中でも、条件2-1において各波長域のボトム波長及びピーク波長の数がそれぞれ2以上である表示装置(表示装置A-vii、D-vi、D-vii、E-vii)は、さらに色の再現性に優れるものであった。
なお、表中では評価していないが、表示装置B-i~B~viiは、条件1-2を満たさないことから、リタデーション値に特有の干渉ムラを抑制しにくいものであった。

- 表示素子の光出射面側の面上に、偏光子a及び光学フィルムXを有し、下記条件1-1及び条件2-1を満たす表示装置。
<条件1-1>
前記光学フィルムXに表示素子側から入射する光のうち、前記光学フィルムXに対して垂直方向に入射する光をL1とする。前記L1の強度を1nmごとに測定する。青の波長域を400nm以上500nm未満、緑の波長域を500nm以上600nm未満、赤の波長域を600nm以上780nm以下とする。前記L1の青の波長域の最大強度をBmax、前記L1の緑の波長域の最大強度をGmax、前記L1の赤の波長域の最大強度をRmaxとする。
前記Bmaxを示す波長をL1λB、前記Gmaxを示す波長をL1λG、前記Rmaxを示す波長をL1λRとする。

前記Bmaxを示す波長をL1λB、前記Gmaxを示す波長をL1λG、前記Rmaxを示す波長をL1λRとする。
前記Bmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λBのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を+αB、前記Gmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λGのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を-αG、前記Gmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λGのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を+αG、前記Rmaxの1/2以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λRのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を-αRとする。
L1λB、L1λG、L1λR、+αB、-αG、+αG及び-αRが、以下(1)~(4)の関係を満たす。

<条件2-1>
前記光学フィルムXの光出射面側から光学フィルムXの垂直方向に出光する光であって、前記偏光子aの吸収軸と平行な吸収軸を有する偏光子bを通過した光をL2とする。前記L2の強度を1nmごとに測定する。前記L2の分光スペクトルの傾きが負から正に変化する波長をボトム波長、前記L2の分光スペクトルの傾きが正から負に切り替わる波長をピーク波長とする。
前記Rmaxの1/3以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λRのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を-βR、前記Rmaxの1/3以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λRのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を+βR、前記Gmaxの1/3以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λGのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を-βG、前記Rmaxの1/3以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λGのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を+βG、前記Bmaxの1/3以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λBのマイナス方向側に位置する最大波長を-βB、前記Rmaxの1/3以下の強度を示す波長であってL1λBのプラス方向側に位置する最小波長を+βBとする。
-βR以上+βR以下の波長域であって、かつ600nm以上780nm以下の波長域をRβ、-βG以上+βG以下の波長域であって、かつ500nm以上600nm未満の波長域をGβ、-βB以上+βB以下の波長域であって、かつ400nm以上500nm未満の波長域をBβとする。
前記Rβ、前記Gβ、及び前記Bβのそれぞれの波長域に、前記ボトム波長及び前記ピーク波長をそれぞれ一以上有する。
