- This invention relates to bearing plates which are used to cap and seal off bearing chambers containing lubricants such as oils or greases.
- Bearing plates are known which are attached to bearing chambers and sealed by means of gaskets. In practice, it is found that any slight misalignment between the bearing plate and the bearing chamber results in the gaskets not providing a good seal.
- a bearing plate provided with at least one toroidal elastomeric member to seal against a bearing chamber when the bearing plate is attached thereto.
- the bearing plate is provided with one or more grooves in a surface which, when the bearing plate is attached to the bearing chamber, abuts against the bearing chamber, each groove being for accommodating a toroidal elastomeric member.
- the toroidal elastomeric member is an O ring.
- the bearing plate is normally provided with one or more boltholes to enable the plate to be attached to the bearing chamber.
- a plurality of boltholes are provided.
- three boltholes are provided with equal circumferential spacing therebetween.
- the bearing plate is provided with a groove which extends around the outside of the boltholes.
- this groove is of substantially circular shape.
- each bolthole is also provided with a circumferential groove or recess which accommodates a toroidal elastomeric member providing sealing around that bolthole. More preferably, the groove surrounding a bolthole extends close to the inner diameter of the groove extending around the entire periphery of the bearing plate. The bolthole grooves may impinge upon the outer groove in such a way that the bolthole O rings contact the outer O ring to provide sealing therebetween.
- the bearing plate is provided with a groove which extends circumferentially around the entire surface of the bearing plate which, in use, will abut the bearing chamber.
- this groove extends inwardly of the boltholes.
- the shape of the groove will depend on the design of the bearing plate but may, for instance, be substantially triangular, in the case where there are three boltholes, with each side of the triangle being at least somewhat outwardly curved.
- the groove passes between an inner abutment or location spigot of the bearing plate, which facilitates the location of the bearing plate at the bearing chamber end, and the boltholes.
- the bearing plate may be provided with, in addition to the location spigot, one or more oil drain recesses which interrupt the location spigot and extend radially outwardly at least part way across the face of the plate.
- the O ring groove may, in this case, run radially outwardly of both the location spigot and the oil drain recesses and radially inwardly of the boltholes.

- Bearing plate 1 which is a first embodiment of the present invention.
- Bearing plate 1 is generally known structure being a shaped annular metal element with a central hole 3 and a thickness of from about 0.5 - 1cm.
- the bearing 1 is connected to a bearing chamber, the end seen in Figure 1 abutting against the end of the bearing chamber and with a drive shaft extending through hole 3.
- Extending peripherally around hole 3 is a location spigot 5 which is interrupted by three circumferentially spaced apart oil drain recesses 7.
- Adjacently outer peripheral surface of plate 1 is a circular groove 9 within which is located an O ring 11.
- Bearing plate 1 is provided with 3 circumferentially equally spaced apart boltholes 13, each of which is provided with a groove or recess 15 set into the end surface 17, which groove 15 runs, at its outer edge into groove 9. Accommodated within groove 15 is a small O ring 19.
- O ring 11 and O rings 19 provide effective sealing to prevent oil or grease leaking outwardly from between bearing plate and the bearing chamber (O ring 11) and between the bearing chamber and the boltholes 13 (O rings 15). - v. .
- O rings instead of thin gaskets provides accommodation for any misalignment of the attachment of the bearing plate to the bearing chamber.
- a second embodiment according to the present invention is a bearing plate 21 essentially similar to that described above with reference to Figure 1. However, in this case sealing between the bearing plate and the bearing chamber is provided by means of O ring 23 which is accommodated in a substantially triangular groove 25 which, as can been seen in
- Figure 2 includes three outwardly curved sides 27 such that the groove extends radially outwards of spigot 5 and oil drain recesses 7 and inwardly of boltholes 13. In this way the need for a plurality of grooves, and corresponding O rings, is avoided.
- a single groove and O ring provides sealing both against the escape of oil outwardly from between the bearing chamber and the bearing plate and also through the boltholes.
- the O ring accommodating grooves in the above described embodiments may be provided with one or two side-walls which may be perpendicular to the base of the groove or inclined inwardly.
- the groove may be of half-dovetail (one inclined wall) or full dovetail (two inclined walls) cross-sectional shape.
