Abstract

A character input device for inputting a plurality of characters assigns a representative character of the character string in which the characters are separated by a set of a predetermined number of characters to a plurality of buttons. If one of the buttons to which the representative character is assigned is depressed and accepted, the character input device selects the representative character. If the depressed button or one of one or more buttons adjacent to the depressed button is depressed without any acceptance operation after the depression of the button to which the representative character is assigned, the character input device selects other characters belonging to the same set except the representative character. All characters can be selected in two button-operations.
