Abstract
A fixing device (1) for catheters (2) or medical probes is described, in particular catheters for peridural and/or spinal anaesthesia, formed essentially of a sheet element (3) having an adhesive side (4) for fixing a respective catheter (2) onto the skin of the patient and provided with through openings (6) suited to be engaged by the catheter (2) in such a way as to define a tie between the sheet element (3) and the catheter (2) itself.
Description
"DEVICE FOR FIXING CATHETERS OR MEDICAL PROBES"
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention concerns a fixing device for catheters or medical probes, in particular catheters for peridural and/or spinal anaesthesia, to which the following description shall refer explicitly without for that reason losing its general nature.
BACKGROUND ART
As is known, after surgical operations in which the patient has been subjected to peridural and/or spinal anaesthesia, the catheter used to carry out said anaesthesia is kept in the position of application on the patient himself for a few days in order to allow the administration of pain-killers to alleviate post-operative pain.
The problem therefore arises of fixing the catheter firmly onto the patient's body so that he can move freely without the risk of the catheter shifting or coming off completely.
At present the catheter is fixed using sticking plasters which, as may be easily imagined, are not able to guarantee that the catheter will remain in the position in which it was fixed on the patient's body when he moves and/or walks about.
DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION
The aim of the present invention is to realise a fixing device for catheters or medical probes which makes it possible to overcome, simply and economically, the inconvenience connected with the fixing systems of a known type and specified above.
Said aim is achieved by the present invention, as it concerns a fixing device for catheters or medical probes, in particular catheters for peridural and/or spinal anaesthesia, comprising a sheet element having an adhesive side for fixing a
respective catheter onto the skin of the patient, characterised in that said sheet element is provided with through openings adapted to be engaged by the catheter in such a way as to define a tie between the sheet element and the catheter itself.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
For a better understanding of the present invention, one preferred embodiment is described below, purely as an example without limitation, with reference to the enclosed drawings, wherein:
- figure 1 illustrates a patient on whom a catheter has been applied by means of a fixing device according to the present invention; - figure 2 illustrates, in a perspective view and on an enlarged scale, the fixing device in figure 1 during application on the patient's body; figure 3 illustrates, in a perspective view and on an enlarged scale, the fixing device in figure 1 at the end of application on the patient's body;
- figures 4 and 5 illustrate, in a perspective view and on an enlarged scale, a sheet element of the fixing device in figure 1 before application on a respective catheter; and figures 6 and 7 illustrate, in a perspective view from opposite sides, the sheet element in figures 4 and 5 after application of the respective catheter.
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
With respect to the figures from 1 to 3, reference 1 indicates, as a whole, a fixing device for catheters 2 or medical probes (themselves known and not illustrated) , the conformation of which is completely comparable to that of the catheters 2.
The fixing device 1 essentially comprises a sheet element 3 (illustrated alone in the figures from 4 to 7) , preferably
triangular in shape, possibly also transparent, which is covered on one side with a medical adhesive substance to enable it to be fixed onto the patient's skin,- the adhesive side, indicated below with 4, is in turn coated with a protective film 5, removable at the moment of applying the sheet element 3 on the patient's skin.
Advantageously, the sheet element 3 is provided with through openings 6 adapted to be engaged by the catheter 2 in such a way as to define a tie between the sheet element 3 and the catheter 2 itself.
According to the example illustrated in the enclosed figures, there are three openings 6 made in a central portion 7 of the sheet element 3; more precisely, the openings 6 identify the vertices of a hypothetical triangle having sides parallel to the respective lateral edges of the sheet element 3.
Preferably, the film 5 presents a notch 8 having a conformation such as to allow the removal of the film 5 itself from the sheet element 3 after the tying of the catheter 2 and without interfering with it.
Advantageously, the notch 8 extends along part of the path followed by the catheter 2 through the sheet element 3. In practice, the notch 8 has the conformation of a broken line connecting the three openings 6 with one of the vertices of the sheet element 3; more precisely, the notch 8 is defined by three sections 9, 10, 11, two of which (9, 10) connect the three openings 6 according to the same path followed by the catheter 2 to make the tie of the sheet element 3 , and the third (11) connects the opening 6, which is the last opening that the catheter 2 passes through during tying, with the vertex of the sheet element 3 adjacent to it.
As may be seen in the figures from 2 to 7 , the sheet element 3
is also provided, at its vertices, with three further through openings 12 suited to allow the possible fixing to the patient's body with sutures.
With reference to the figures from 1 to 3 , the fixing device 1 comprises, lastly, an additional sheet element 13 having an adhesive side to allow it to be fixed onto the central portion 7 of the sheet element 3 in order to cover the tie created between the catheter 2 and the sheet element 3 itself.
The additional sheet element 13 is conveniently coated, along the adhesive side, with a protective film 14 (figure 2) , removable at the time of application and preferably presenting a discoid shape.
In use, the sheet element 3 is first passed through by the catheter 2 in order to define a tie and then, after removal of the film 5, applied by the adhesive side 4 onto the patient's body.
In particular, the catheter 2 is slid along the side of the sheet element 3 covered by the film 5 until it reaches a first opening 6, through which it passes; the catheter 2 is then slid along the side of the sheet element 3 opposite the adhesive side 4 until it reaches another opening 6 and passes through this one too so as to bring the catheter 2 itself onto the side of the film 5. It also passes through the last opening 6 so as to complete the tie between the catheter 2 and the sheet element 3.
At this point the catheter 2 is partly rolled onto itself and comes out, with respect to the sheet element 3, at one of the vertices of the latter.
The film 5 is then removed without any interference with the catheter 2 which engages the openings 6 thanks to the notch 8
so as to allow the sheet element 3 to adhere to the patient's skin.
At this point the additional sheet element 13, after removal of the film 14, is applied on the sheet element 3 on the side opposite the one fixed onto the patient's body in such a way as to cover the rolled part of the catheter 2.
An examination of the characteristics of the fixing device 1 made according to the present invention shows the advantages that it allows to be obtained.
In particular, thanks to the tie which is formed between the catheter 2 and the sheet element 3, the fixing device 1 is able to ensure that the catheter 2 is kept in position on the patient's body when he moves and/or walks about.
Lastly it is clear that modifications and variations may be made to the fixing device 1 for catheters and medical probes described and illustrated here which do not depart from the scope of protection defined by the claims.
Claims
1.- Fixing device (1) for catheters (2) or medical probes, in particular catheters for peridural and/or spinal anaesthesia, comprising a sheet element (3) having an adhesive side (4) for fixing a respective catheter (2) onto the skin of the patient, characterised in that said sheet element (3) is provided with through openings (6) adapted to be engaged by said catheter (2) in such a way as to define a tie between the sheet element (3) and the catheter (2) itself.
2.- Fixing device according to claim 1, characterised in that said openings (6) are made in a central portion (7) of said sheet element (3) .
3.- Fixing device according to claim 1 or 2 , characterised in that said sheet element (3) has a substantially triangular shape .
4. - Fixing device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that there are at least three said openings (6) .
5.- Fixing device according to claim 4, characterised in that said openings (6) identify the vertices of a hypothetical triangle having sides parallel to the respective lateral edges of said sheet element (3) .
6. - Fixing device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that said adhesive side (4) of said sheet element (3) is coated with a film (5) removable at the moment of applying the sheet element (3) itself on the patient ' s skin.
7.- Fixing device according to claim 6, characterised in that said film (5) presents a notch (8) having a shape such as to allow the removal of the film (5) itself from said sheet element (3) after the tying of said catheter (2) and without interfering with it.
8. - Fixing device according to claim 7 , characterised in that said notch (8) of said film (5) extends along part of the path suited to be followed by said catheter (2) through said sheet element (3) .
9. - Fixing device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that it also includes an additional sheet element (13) having an adhesive side to allow it to be fixed onto said sheet element (3) in order to cover the tie created between said catheter (2) and said sheet element (3) itself.
10. - Fixing device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that said sheet element (3) is also provided with further through openings (12) suited to allow the possible fixing to the patient's body with sutures.
