To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that 1, JOHN F. CUMMINGS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Covers for Brakes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to covers for brakes, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a cover of simple construction for inclosing the brake on automobiles and to prevent dust and dirt from gaining access to the brake members to also prevent oil or lubricant from dripping from the brake.

Another object of the invention is to provide means for inclosing the brake of a motor carriage to prevent the accumulation of dust, dirt and foreign matter upon the operative parts of the brake and to permit the parts to be lubricated without dripping and at the same time to present a good appearance to keep the parts in proper working order.

These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the brake cover, showing the axle in section and one member of the cover in dotted lines to indicate the manner in which the cover may be removed from the brake and connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the cover and the brake inclosed therein, the axle being shown broken off intermediate its ends. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the cover removed from the brake. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the clips for securing the cover to an axle bracket. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view, showing in section the upper portion of the cover and illustrating the packing strips applied to the inner edges of the cover.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates one of the members of the cover, and 2 is the other member, these two members each being of substantially circular form to inclose the brake. The rotating brake member 3 is connected to the shaft 4L by means of a base plate secured to the flange 4 through the medium of bolts extending through the holes 5. A vertical shaft bracket 6 provided with an enlarged central portion 7 in which the shaft l is journaled is provided with a lug 7 and sheet metal clips 8 are riveted at 9 to the rim portion 10 of the brake cover. The clips 8 are secured to the lugs 7 by means of bolts 11. An overlapping guard plate 12 is secured to one of the clips 8 to close the joint between the two members 1 and 2 at the upper side. A clip 13 is secured to the underside of the cover, said clip being secured to the bracket 6 by means of a bolt 14: extending through a hole 15 in the bent-over portion of the clip. This clip is secured to the rim portion 10 of the casing by means of rivets passing through the holes 16.

011 the lower edges of the cover members packing strips 17 are secured by means of rivets l8, and these packing strips bear against the sides of flanges 19 formed on the rotary member 3 of the brake, said rotary member revolving against the strips 17 and the latter serving to exclude dirt, dust and other foreign matter which would be liable to clog the brake surfaces of the shoe and member 3. The brake shoes 20 are operated by a lever 21 extending through an opening 22 in the rim 10 of the cover.

The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows: When the cover has been applied to the brake all the operative parts of said brake are inclosed and are thus kept free from dirt and can be lubricated without fear of dripping grease. lVhenever it is necessary to gain access to the operative parts of the brake, this may readily be done by removing the bolts 11 and 1a. and separating the two members 1 and 2.

I claim 1. A cover for vehicle brakes comprising two cover members provided with clips for securing said members together to inclose a brake, a rim connected to said cover members, a bracket for supporting the brake 011 the vehicle axle, said clips being secured to said bracket, and packing strips secured to the inside of said cover members.
