, Be it known that I, WILLIAM THOMAS MILWARD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 14Holyhead road,I-Iandsworth, in the county of Stafford, England, gentleman, have invented. a new and useful Improved Device for Holding Down Mats, Carpets, or the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

This invention comprises an improved device for holding down mats, carpets, or the like, and has for its obj ect to rovide an improved spring pressed flap or older applica ble to a door jamb orlike part for exerting pressure on the edges of a carpet or the like to keep the same down in proper place, without presenting surfaces likely to be in the way.

Tlfe device consists of a spring flap or holder which may be of wire or plate form hinged to a securing plate, with a spring about its hinge and also with means such as a hook for retaining the plate or tongue in ino erative position when desired.

Fig. 2. shows a front a vertical section on Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 shows a section of a modification in which the pivoted hook in the other figures is replaced by a spring clip for securing the holder or fiap in the disengaged position as shown by the dotted lines. 7 1' In the drawings the flap F is shown constructed of stout wire which is bent in the form of a trapezium. The ends of the wire practically meet on the shortside and form convenient parts for the hinge. The hinging of the flap is effected by springing the ends of the wire into the curled over portion B of the attachment plate A which is screwed to the jamb of the door, or other suitable part as required. A spring S is arranged around the hinged joint bearing at one end on the flap and at the other on view of the device with the holder part or flap extended. Fig. 3. shows the plate A and so arranged as to urge the flap downwards. As will be understood from reference to the drawings the movement of the flap toward the attachment plate is against the action of the spring S. Thus when the (lGViGGlS arranged in position for use such as at Fig. 1 or otherwise to suit particular requirements, the flap F is exerting pressure down onto the mat M or the like arranged beneath. it, thus keeping it in place. The arrangement of the spring fiap in this way allows a strong durable spring being used. At the top of the attachment late A is hinged a hook H which holds up t e flap .out of engagement when it is required to move the mat. As shown in Fig. 4, this hook may be replaced by a spring clipK formed out of a piece of bent metal at the to of the plate A.

1. In a device for holding down door mats andthe like, a metal plate, a hinged flap at the foot of the plate, and a spring urging said flap away from said plate, and flap retaining means on said plate, substantially as described. J

2. In a device for holding down door mats, and the like, a metal plate, a hinged flap at the foot of the plate, and a spring urging said flap away from said plate and a hinged hookat the top of said plate, said plate being capable of being secured to a support and having the top extremity tongued, said tongue being bent over to form a bearing for said hook, said plate being turned over at the base to form a bearing and hinge for said flap, said flap being formed of bent wire in a suitable form and urged outward by said coiled wire spring wound round said flap and inside said I bottom hinge substantially as described.
