Description

- itttrd tete @met (titille,
Letters Patent No. 90,671, dated Junel, 1869.
I IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-POWER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To yall whom it may concern:
Be in known that I, JACOB E. Lim, of 'East c0- calico township, in the county of Lancaster, and State cf Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Arrangement in the. Gear on Horse-Powers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2, a top or plain view.
Figure 3, a side elevation.
Figure 4, an end elevation.
Figure 5 shows the detached gear in perspective.
The nature of my invention consists in the manner of combining the jack-gear and central shaft, by means of a loose cogged hub, provided with a (ogged flange or wheel, so`as to derive motion from the main or driving-wheel, and impart it directly to the pulleyshaft.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, a brief explanation of my drawings will suffice.
The ground-flame or base, B, consists of the two sides B, end and central cross-pieces B', of stout, square timber, supporting a top plank, A, on uprights a. The vertical shaft D d of the main wheel E, has its step in the centre of' the -lower central cross-piece B', and a shouldered bearing in the top A.
The enlarged hub e, of the wheel E, with its slightly bevelled cogs on the lower face of thecircumference,
' and arched radiating'arms, are not novel, nor the mode of attaching the sweeps C, to give it motion. Below this enlarged hubI employ a loose huh, f, around the shaft d. This hub is provided with cogs on the lower face, also with radiating arms for a cogged wheel, F, revolving on the same plane, or nearly with the main or outer wheel E.
There are also two ,horizontal shafts G, one on each side of the vertical centre Shaft al, provided with bevel pinions g', at each end.v I
The outer pinions g, meshing with the cogs of the main or driving-wheel E, on opposite sides of the circumference; the inner piuions g, 'meshing with the cogs on the loose or central hub j, on both sides, give it motion, together with the cogged wheel F, connected with and forming a part of said loose hub. This wheel Fineshes into a pinion H, on its shaftvh, which latter is provided with the ordinary universal joint and bearings, and is connected with the pulleyshaft, to propel the machinery, in the ordinary manner. rlhe operation is easily understood from what has been said.
I am aware that there is no novelty in the masterwheel, with its arched radiating arms, and cogged, or
spur-gear, with its vertical shaft and lever-sockets variously combined with stationary' hollow axis and journals, and radial-armed `hub as shown in patent, N o. 33,252, September 10, 1861, and others variously arranged in the gear, which I do not claim.
` But I am not aware of any power where the gearing brings the several parts of action, on the same horizontal plane, by means of a wheel inside of the master-wheel, so connect-ed with a loose hub Surrounding the shaft of the master-wheel, as to receive the double action of the master-wheel by two horizontal shafts, each provided by a pinion on each end, receiving and imparting this twofold action to said loose hub and wheel, or central jack, andcommunid eating it directly to the pulley-shaft, connected, by a stra-por otherwise, with the machinery to he prupelled.
This arrangement gives all the speed and Ipower that can be desired, and constitutes a compact, strong, cheap, and edicient horse-power.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
-The combination and arrangement of the loose cogged hub f, with its'spur-whcel F, when on the vertical shaft d, of the master-wheel E, and on the Same horizontal plane, so that both lact jointly upon twoV pairs of pinions, g, on their shafts GG, and impart" motion to a pinion, H, on the pulley-shaft h, substantially in the manner and for the purpose Specified. f
