UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SOHEER, OF SILVERTON, COLORADO.
BUNK.
No. 895,898. g
T 0 all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, CHARLES SOHEER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Silverton, in the county of San Juan and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bunks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bunks, the object of the invention being to provide a portable bunk especially adapted for the use of miners, andin railroad cars, ships and the like, the said bunk being constructed in such manner as to render the same light and strong, and at the same time thoroughly sanitary.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention con? sists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspectiveyiew of a double bunk embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
The bunk contemplated in this invention comprises essentially four corner posts 1, and it may here be stated that the said corner posts as well as all of the other bars of the bunk are tubular, being constructed of The posts 1 may be of suitable height to support one or more bunks or beds )roper, two of such bunks being illustratec in Fig. 1. Each bunk or bed support embodies the parallel longitu dinal bars 2 and the end bars 3. The longitudinal bars 2 may be continuous from end to end but the cross bars 3 are preferably made up in sections, each to comprise a number of T-couplings 4 to provide for interposing a plurality of tubular or pipe slats 5 be tween the cross bars 3, the said slats extending lengthwise of the bunk parallel to each other and to the side or longitudinal bars 2, thus forming a slatted support for a mattress or spring bed bottom. The corner posts 1 are likewise by preference made up of sections so as to comprise'corner elbows 6 to which the opposite ends of the bars 2 and 3 are connected.
Above the bed bottoms or supports thus formed, I arrange longitudinal and end guard rails 7 and 8 respectively, the object of which is to hold the mattress or bed bottoms in place and also to prevent the occupant or occupants of the bunk from rolling out of the Specification of Letters Patent.

same. On one or more of the corner posts I arrange one or more steps 9 at a suitable elevation or elevations to enable persons to climb to elevated positions, each of said steps comprising a tubular or sleeve portion 10 which embraces one of the corner posts and is suitably secured thereto by a pin, key or set screw, as may be preferred.
I wish it to be understood that I construct the end rails 3 of short sections of tubular piping which are provided with screw threaded ends and the bodies of the T-couplings are likewise screw threaded for securing the screw threaded ends of the short sections to said bodies, further the branches of said couplings are screw threaded to connect with the screw threaded ends of the slats, and by means of said short sections with the bodies of the T-couplings secured thereto the slats are prevented from having lateral movement.
Having thus fully described the invention,
What is claimed as new is A bunk comprising four corner posts with double T-couplings having their body portion secured thereto and arranged in pairs thereon, one pair being at the top portions of each post and one pair being arranged approximately near the central portions of each post, said body portions of each of said double T-couplings having branch couplings which extend at right angles therewith and in opposite directions therefrom, tubular side rails having their opposite ends secured to the branches of the double T-couplings which extend in one direction from said posts, single T-couplings having the ends of short sectional tubes secured thereto to provide end rails, said end rails being secured to the branches of the double T-couplings which extend in the other direction from said posts, longitudinal slats having their opposite ends secured to each of the branches of the single T-couplings, and tubular side and end guard rails secured respectively to the oppositely disposed branches of the double T- couplings so as to be arranged above the first mentioned side and end rails, and a coupling having a step therewith secured to one of the posts, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES SOI-IEER.
