Description

HARVEY CHAPMAN, OF DORCHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
CLEANING DEVICE.
Specification lof Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1907.
Application filed April 8. 19h07- Serial No. 367.055.
To all whom it 'may 'concer/n.
Be it known that I, HARVEY CHAPMAN, a
\ citizen of the United States, residing at Dorchester, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cleaning Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the Same.-
This invention relates to devices for holding cloths, Sponges and other similar articles, used for cleaning the outsides of Windows and other places which are hard of access; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed. In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of the cleaning device.
Fig. 2 iS a front view of the device. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on the line in Fig. 2.
. A and B are two opposed jaws formed by bending wire into suitable loops. These jaws are provided with Shanks wand b respectively, each Shank being formed by the two end portions of the wire loop arranged side by S1de. These Shanks are preferably curved, and the 'aws are referably arranged at an angle to t e said s anks, but the jaws may be arranged in line with the Shanks if desired and the Shanks may be straight.
. The Shanks and the jaws are formed of metallic s ring wire having sufficient elasticity, an the Shanks are arrangedso that the' jaws are'normally separated by a Space suflicient for insertion of a cloth or sponge;
C is a metallic'tubg in which the end portions of the Shanks are inserted and secured by solder c, or other approved means. lhe tube C is preferably inserted and secured 1n a wooden handle D of any convenient length,
and if desired the tube may be telescopic in the Said handle l When the tube C is slidable in the handle a Set-screw cis preferably provided to secure, the tube in any desired position, but when the tube is driven tightly into the hole in the handle, or is otherwise Secured to it, the set- Screw is not required.
v E is a ring or Short piece of tube which is slidable on the'shanks.
When this ring is slid upwardly on the Shanks it clamps the cleaning cloth or sponge between the jaws.
What I claim is:
1. In a cleaning device, the combination, with a pair of jaws having Shanks formed of tWo pieces of'spring wire arranged side by Side, the end portions of the said Shanks being formed into a bundle of four straight and parallel wires, tions of the said Shanks rigidly secured in it, a clam ing ring slidable on the said Shanks, and a lliandle provided with a hole in which the said tube is inserted.
2. In a cleaning device, the combination,
with a pair of jaws provided with Spring Shanks, of a clamping-ring slidable on the,
middleportions of the Said Shanks, a retaining tube having the end ortions of the Said Shanks secured in it, 'an a handle provided .60 of'a tube having the end porwith a,hole in which the said tube is 1n`Serted.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my Signature in the presence of two witnesses.
- l HARVEY CHAPMAN.
