Be it known that I, GEORGE L. CRABB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Champaign, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signs, of which the following is a speci'cation.

T he object of my invention is to provide an improved universal sign for windows of shops which will be so arranged that the shop-keeper may change the sign from day to day, or whenever desired without the necessity of employing a sign painter to prep are new signs, the device being of simple and cheap construction, durable, and simple and efficient in operation.

llfith these and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, and arrangements of the parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the Jfollowing description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a face view of my improved universal sign; Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of a portion of thel device; and, Fig. 4 is a detail view illustrating one of the disks and its supporting strip.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The body l of my improved sign may be composed of suitably heavy cardboard or any desired material, and may be of any desirable shape or ornamentation. In the present instance, it is shown as square. The body portion l is provided with a longitudinally extending display slot or opening 2 which may be of any length and height.

A series of overlapping disks 3 are arranged between the rear face of the body 1 and a back member 4, the latter being of less height than the body l and exposing the disks at the rear and serving in the present instance as the support for the disks. Any number of these disks may be employed according to the length of display matter desired and the disks are arranged so that they yings,so that a disk overlap each other, but leave exposed a preferably marginal portion of each disk. Each disk is provided on its outer face with a circularly arranged series of letters and numerals, any one of which may be brought into registry with the display matter 2 of the body 1 by rotating the disk. In the pres-.

ent instance, these disks 3 overlap from right to left and each disk is mounted to rotate about its center upon a pivot 5 which may be of any desired construction, a paper fastener of a conventional type being shown for this purpose in the accompanying drawmay be readily detached wherever desired. The pivot of each disk is secured to one end of a longitudinally extending strip 6, and said strip is secured at its other end to the front face of the back 4, being preferably also secured to the back by means of a staple or similar fastening device. The strips 6 are preferably all of the same length and overlap each other at the ends where they are secured to the back, and they serve as spacing devices between every two disks, so that one disk may be turned without the liability of turning any of the others. Preferably the disks 3 and their supporting strips 6 are composed of cardboard thinner than the cardboard forming the body portion and back of the device7 and to properly space the first disk of the series from the back, a small piece of card-board, such as that indicated at 7 is securedto the front face of the back 4 against which the first disk of the series rests.

From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is manifest that a sign of any character may be displayed at the opening 2 by rotating the disks till the desired letters and numerals register with said opening. In the preferred arrangement, the display opening 2 terminates at such a distance from one end of the body of the device as to leave suflicient space for the name of the rm using the universal sign of my invention. The entire device may be made in different sizes and designs, as is evident.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

l. A universal sign comprising a body plate provided with a` display opening, a series of display disks mounted at the back of said display opening, one disk overlapping the next adjacent disk, a portion of each IOO IIO

overlapped disk projecting, each disk being provided With display matter at its margin, a series of overlapping strips free at one end, the disks being mounted to rotate in the free ends of the strips, and a back support to Which the other ends of said strips are secured.

2. A universal sign comprising a body plate provided with a rlongitudinal display slot, a back, a series of longitudinally eX- tending strips secured to the back at one end and having their other ends free, and a series of display disks pivotally secured at their centers to the free ends of said strips, said` strips serving as spacing devices between every tWo disks, substantially as described.

3. A universal sign consistin of a body plate provided with a longitudinal display opening, a back, a series of longitudinally eX- tending strips, each of Which is secured at one end to the front face of said back, the said strips overlapping each other and of substantially the same length, and a series of display disks pivotally secured to the free ends oil the respective strips, said disks overlapping each other, a portion of each overlapped disk pro jecting substantially as described.

4. A universal sign consisting of a body plate provided with a longitudinal display opening, a back of less height than the said body plate and located at the rear thereof, a series of longitudinally extending stripssecured between the body plate and the back near the upper edge of the latter and secured at one end only, the said strips overlapping each other and of substantially the same length, a series of display disks pivotally securedto the free ends of the respective strips, said disks overlapping each other, a portion of each overlapped disk projecting, and a portion of all of the disks projecting above the upper edge of the back, as and for the purpose set forth.
