APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 4. 1906.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED J. LEVY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-I IALF TO MONTEFIORE LEVY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 9, 1907.
Application filed September 4,1906. Serial No- 333,232.
To all w/wm it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED J. LEVY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to a button particularly adapted for use on apparel which is fre quently laundered.
The object of my invent-ion is to construct a simple inexpensive button which is per manently secured to the garment in such a manner as to withstand the rough usage to which garments are ordinarily subjected while being washed and ironed.
To the above purposes my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a button of my improved construction in position on a portion of a garment. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a button. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the construction of my improved button an approximately hemispherical body 1 is formed of cotton or analogous fibrous material, and stretched tightly and smoothly over this body 1 is the center of a circular section of fabric 2, thus forming the head of the button. The fabric is drawn together immediately beneath the center of the body 1, and a suitable cord or thread 3 is tightly wound around the fabric immediately beneath the head, and the ends of the thread or cord are tied together. The outer portion of the circular section of fabric is smoothed out, so as to form an approximately lat disk 4, which is intended to occupy a horizontal plane immediately beneath the head of the button. In smoothing out or forming this disk it is necessary to form a series of radially-arranged folds in the fabric of which the button is formed, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
When a button so constructed is to be attached to a garment, an opening 5, similar to a buttonhole, but smaller than the head of the button, is formed in the garment, and the disk portion 4 of the button is inserted l through this opening and is so manipulated as to lie fiat immediately against the inside of the garment fabric around said opening. (See Fig. 3.) WVhen thus positioned, a circular row of stitches 6 are taken around the opening 5 through the garment fabric and through the disk portion of the fabric forming the button. This very effectually secures the button to the garment, and when so secured the gathered portion of the button fabric which is tied by the cord or thread 3 extends through the opening 5, with the button-head projecting from the face of the garment fabric. The lining 7 -of the garment lies flat against the disk portion of the button and conceals the same from View.
A button of my improved construction can be easily and cheaply manufactured, can be quickly secured to a garment, and when properly secured effectually resists any tendency to be pulled off as a result of undue strain or while the garment is being washed and ironed.
I claim 1. The combination with a garment having an opening therein, of a button constructed with a head, and an integral flexible disk portion adapted to be inserted through the opening in the garment and secured to-the garment fabric; substantially as specified.
2. A button, comprising a section of flexible material, a filler located in the center of said section of material, and which material is gathered and tied immediately beneath the center of the filler, and the outer portion of the section of material being extended horizontally from the gathered portion; substantially as specified.
3. The herein-described button, comprising a circular section of flexible material, a hemispherical body over which the center of the flexible section is stretched, which flexible section is gathered and tied immediately beneath the body, and the outer portion of the flexible material being formed into a horizontally-arranged disk; substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED J. LEVY. I/Vitnesses:
M. P. SMITH, E. L. WALLAcE.
