TRACK-CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
'PatentedOct. so, 1906.
Application filed June 27, 1906. Serial No. 323,628.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE ASHLEY MADISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Bluff, in the county of Jefferson, State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Track- Cleaners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sawmills, and more particularly to track-cleaners therefor, and has for its object to provide a cleaner which will be simple, which will arrange .to discharge matter removed from the rail at the inner sides thereof in position to be engaged by the truck drag, and which will include friction-reducing means for minimizing wear'of the cleaner and the truck-wheels.
It is to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur toa person skilled in the art.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is aside elevation of a portion of a truck, showing a wheel provided with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the cleaner on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the cleaner and a portion of the wheel, taken longitudinally thereof and on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view showing a two-wheel cleaner. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line 5 5 of 'Fig. 4.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a body" portion 6, consisting of parallel side plates 7, having end blocks 8 disposed therebetween at their ends. The end blocks are spaced from each other longitudinally of the cleaner to form a vertical passage 9, passing therethrough, and the upper inner portions of the end blocks are cut away on arcs to form concave surfaces 10, which extend in a common line of curvature, to receive thereagainst the periphery of a wheel 11, engaged in the passage 9.
Attaching-bolts. 12 are passed through the side plates and end blocks, and the lates are thus detachably connected to the bibck.
Transverse circular passages 13 are formed horizontally through the end blocks and open at their sides through the concave surfaces 10, and removably disposed in these passages there are rollers 14, which project outwardly slightly beyond the surfaces 10 to rest against the periphery of the wheel 11 in the capacity of friction-reducing devices. It will be readily seen that these rollers are held in their respective passages by the side plates 7. 1
The end blocks 8 extend outwardly beyond the side plates, and the outer end faces of these blocks converge toward one side of the cleaner, these faces being formed at acute angles to the outer side faces of the blocks.
As will be understood, one of these cleaners is engaged with each wheel of a sawmilltruck, the end blocks resting upon the rails and the wheels engaging therails between the end blocks. The cleaners are thus carried with the wheels to scrape from the rails any matter lying thereupon, and by reason of the convergence of the outer end faces of the blocks 8 this matter is scraped between the rails to be engaged by the truck-drag.
In Fig. 4 there is shown a cleaner adapted for the reception of two wheels, the side plates being somewhat elongated and being provided with inwardly-extending flanges'A centrally of their upper edges, the flanges having tongue-and-groove connections, as shown at B. The ends of these flanges lie in close relation to the wheel, as shown, to prevent matter from falling between the wheels, and a confining-bolt C is engaged in the side plates below and adjacent to the flanges.
The outer end faces of the end blocks are slanted laterally, as mentioned in the foregoing, throughout their entire widths, and they are also slanted inwardly and upwardly, as shown.
What is claimed is 1. A trackcleaner comprising spaced plates, spaced end blocks removably secured between the plates, said end blocks having their outer end surfaces slanted throughout their entire widths toward a common side of the cleaner, and having transverse roller-receiving passages formed therethrough and communicating with the space between the blocks, and rollers engaged in the passages and extending into the s ace between the blocks for engagement 0 a wheel located therewithin, said plates extending over the ends of the passages, to prevent disengagement of the rollers therefrom;
2. Atrack-cleaner comprising spaced end blocks adapted for the reception of a wheel therebetween, said end blocks having transof the passages to prevent disengagement of Verse passages communicating with the the rollers therefrom. 10 space therebetween, rollers removably dis- In testimony whereof I affix my signature posed in the passages and extending intoin presence of two witnesses.
