IMPROVEMENT IN FILTERS.

vSplaint-ation forming part of Letters Patent No. 82,255, dated September l5, lefiji.

To all whom yit may concern:

Beit known that I, THOMAS SIMMONS, 5 Hicks street, Brooklyn, L. I., in the county of Kings, and in the State of New York, haveinven ted cer tain new and useful Improvements in Filters; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theI letters of reference marked thereon.

In the annexed drawings, making; pa-rt ot this specification, A represents a hollowr cylinder, which I use as a case for my filter. One head of this cylinder is movable and the other is stationary, and to each head is connected a pipe, l), upon which is a screw-threatl for. connecting it by means of a union, li, to a pipe, (lr, through which the liquid to be filtered is conducted from a torce-puni p.

passes into this frame O, and one end of saidA pipe connects with that pipe l) which conducts'the liquid into the frame.

'lhe pipel) connects with a pipe, (i, which provided Awith screw-threads, by means of which the union B connects either one ot' them to the pipe G, it will readily be seen that, when the filter becomes foul, by reversing it and connecting its lower end to thev pipe Gr, water or any other suitable liquid can be forced through it for the purpose of removing all obstructions from its iuterstices.

This filter may be used f'or filtering: water or any other liquid. V

The above-described invention an im` provenient upon my patent-for a filter bearing; f date April 11,1865.

` The improvement consists in the use ot' the single coil (l dispensing' with the `jointed sp1-iup; and intermediate double 'flange in the vmovable head, and the pipesl) l), with their screw-threads, so that the filter may be rovers-od f'or clcansing, &e., and in the pipes (i, as and toi-'the purposes set forth.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. 'Ihe case A, provided with a movable head, and each of its heads being.; provided with the pipes l) ]),upon which screw-threads are formed, so that the filter can be reversed and cleansed, substantially as set forth.

2. The frame tl, as constructed and combined with the case A and pipes l) l) and (l,

vwhen used with a torce-pump, as and for the purpose set forth.
