SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N6. 778,254, dated December 27, 1904.

Be it known that I, HECTOR V. LoUeI- a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of North Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tablets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in tablets, and is directed more particularly to certain improvements in that class of tablets in which one or more cards may be swung in either directionfrom one position in the tablet to the front or back thereof for the purpose of quickly exposing the faceof a desired card irrespective ofits position in the tablet.

A further object is to provide certain improvements in the several parts of the tablet. which forms the subjectmatter of United States Letters Patent No. 7 44,57 8, granted to me the 17th day of November, 1903.

A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents my improved tablet in front elevation. Fig. 2 is a back view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view showing one of the cardsin an intermediate point which it would occupy when being swung from one position in the tablet to the front or back thereof. Fig. 4 is an enlarged View of the top of the tablet. Fig. 5 is a view of the blank from which the hollow pivot is formed. Fig. 6 is an end view of the hollow pivot when completed to form the eye for the attachment of the springs. Fig. 7 is a top View of the same. Fig. 8 is an enlarged plan'view of one of the springs; and Fig. 9 is a detail view, on a much larger scale, showing the free end of the spring bent at an angle to the balance of the Spring.

The tablet is herein shown as comprising a plurality of cards '1, which cards may be made of celluloid or other suitable material presenting writing-surfaces thereon,if so desired. This tablet is provided with a slot 2 extending from the top of the tablet inwardly to a circular hole 3 a short distance fromthe top of the tablet. eye-5 extends through the hollow pivot 4 ec cent'rically. This pivot 4 is preferably made from a blank 6, having cut-away portions 7 and 8, which cut-away portions form thewalls of the eye 5 when the pivot 4 is completed by bending the blank 6 into position.

The front and back of the tablet are en' gaged by two springs 9 and 10. A pin or rivet 11 passes through the eye 5 in the hollow pivot 4 and serves to secure one end of each These springs grip the cards of the tablet between them and they are bent inwardly, thus offsetting the cards upon the opposite sides of the slot 2 in the tablet. The free end of the spring 9 is bent obliquely outward away from the front of the tablet, as shown at 12, and the free end of the spring 10 is bent obliquely outward away from the back of the tablet, as shown at 13. These portions 12 and 13 of the two springs serve to guide any one or more of the cards which it may be desired to swing in either direction from one position in the tablet to the front or back thereof, as the case may be.

The device as herein shown and described absolutely prevents any liability of a card catching when being swung in either direction. free ends of the springs also tend to retain the cards in their normal position. I

It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form, construction. and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth; but

What I claim is I 1. A tablet comprising a plurality of slotted cards pivoted together and oppositely arranged springs ofi'setting the cards on the opposite sides of the slot to permit a card to be swung in either direction from one position in the tablet to the front or backthereof.

2. A tablet comprisinga plurality of slotted cards pivoted together and oppositely arranged springs olfsetting the cards on the op posite sides of the slot to permit a card to be swung from one position in the tablet to the front or back thereof, the said springs having The oblique branches 12 and 13 at the l branches at their free ends extended obliquely away from the tablet.

3. A tablet comprising a plurality of slotted cards, a pivot connecting them and oppositelyarranged springs carried by the pivot ofi'setting the cards on the opposite sides of the slot to permit a card to be swung in either direction from one position in the tablet to the front or back thereof.

4. Atablet comprisingaplurality of slotted cards, a. pivot connecting them and oppositelyarranged springs connected eceentrieally to the pivot, and offsetting the cards on the opposite sides of the slot to permit a card to be swung in either direction from one position in the tablet to the front or back thereof.
