T0 WHOMIT MAY cononnn:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN SGQTTON, of Richmond, Wayne-county, and State of Indiana, have made new and useful Improvements in Tree-Boae,s and I, hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to thed'rawings that accompany and form a part of these specifications.
The object of my invention. is to provide abox or device for the protection and support of young trees,
designed not only to secure them from damage by horses or cattle, but also to keep them upright, and prevent their being swayed about or broken by-the wind.
Figure 1, perspective view. I
Figure 2, view of jointed'bandf by which the slats are held in position.
Figure 3, sectional view, showing the braces or support for the tree.
Letter A, one section of the band. v
Letter B, another section, of diflerent' form.
Letters G C, jhint or fastening for the ends of the band.
Letter D, wooden slats. v
Letters E E, braces to support the tree and keep it upright.
' By reference to the drawings, it will be'seen that there are three difl'erentlyformed sections in the band, each intermediate one being provided with-lugs 0r projections, as-shown'at A, fig. 2, so that when the sectionsare united and formed into a circle, these lugs grasp the edges of the slats D and hold them firmly.
- The parts 0 and C, connecting the bands, are so arranged, that whenever the band becomes loose by the shrinking of the wooden'slats or otherwise, it may be tightened by bringing the parts C and C closer together. To the part G, I attach two pins, 2 n, two holes being made in (1' to admit them when the two parts are brought together, and the ratchet Z, as seen in fig. 2, serves to hold them.
' The braces are provided with ratchet-teeth, so'that they may be moved back and forth in the openings prepared for them, as shown in figs. 2 and 3, and adjusted to the size of the tree.
These sections, A and B, are cbnnected together by a hinge-joint formed by the bolts, ff, attached-to each v end-of the section AI On each of the bolts ff is a small shoulder, as seen at it, in fig. 2, and a smallslot, i, in
the openings 7c in section B. This allows the bolt with its-shoulder to enter the opening when the sections are arranged in a straight line, but, when broughtinto a circle to surround and form the box, the shoulder it passes by the slot i, and keeps the two sections united. i
The sections forming the'band surrounding and supportingthe slatsD, I make of cast iron, and should be uniform in size and shape, so that each section will fit in its corresponding place.- This enables us to increase or diminish the size ofjthebox, by adding ordeducting sectionsA and Band the slats D, as we may desire.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' A band or belt, constructed of the various sections, A, B, and G, formed substantially as described, and for o the purposes set forth. I
The braces E, in combination with the band, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses STEPHEN SGOTTON.
Witnesses; I
' I H. JULIAN,
