Description

No. 758,741. PATENTED MAY 3, 1904. H. E. DUNN.
DENTAL LAMP.
APPLIOATION FILED JULY 2.1903.
R0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented May 3, 1904.
HIRAh I E. DUNN, OF WVARREN, OHIO.
DENTAL LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,741, dated May 3, 1904.
Application filed Iuly 2, 1903. Serial 110- 164,076. (No model.)
To all wit/fin, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HIRAM E. DUNN, of \Varren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention isto provide a dental lamp capable of throwing a reduced or concentrated light into the mouth of the patient and also throw light upon the instrument-table and at the same time without annoyance to either the patient or dentist.
Heretofore dental lamps have usually cast an unpleasant glare of light in the patients eyes and in the eyes of the operator, while failing to concentrate the raysupon the patients mouth.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure l is a view in perspective. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of a portion of the lamp proper with parts broken away. Fig. 4: shows a slight modification.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a hood which at one end for-ms a support for a circular lens 2, which may be either pianoconvex or double convex. This hood is preferably of semicylindrical formation, but may be otherwise formed, if desired. 3 is an incandescent electric lamp mounted in the other end of the hood and occupying such position relatively thereto and to the lens as to cause the light-rays to fall directly on the worktable, as well as to be projected through the lens. 1 preferably employ a lamp having a as by day.
must of necessity be located a sufiicient dis tance from but in line with the focal center of the lens. The hood is provided with a pivoted bail 5, by which it is secured to a bracket 6 capable of being swung in any desired direction, as well known in the art. In Fig. 4 1 have shown a slightly-modified form of hood which may be used in connection with an acetylene or other gas lamp, a chimney7 being arranged at one end of the hood.
From what has been said it will be seen that by my invention I am enabled to concentrate light directly at the working point in a patients month without subjecting him to any annoyance, and at the same time the operator has the benefit of a direct light upon the worktable, the rest of the room being practically in darkness.
I claim as my invention- 1. A dental lamp having an open-bottom hood of cylindrical formation and a lens supported by such hood at one end thereof, as set forth.
2. A dental lamp comprising an open-bottom hood, a lens at one end thereof, and a lamp supported by said hood in line with such ens.
3. A dental lamp having a hood of semicylindricalformation, a circular lens at one end thereof, and an incandescent lamp inline with such lens supported by said hood at the other end thereof, the filament of the lamp being of spiral formation, as set forth.
I. The combination with the movable bracket, of the semicylindrieal hood pivotally secured thereto, a circular lens at one end of such hood, and an incandescent lamp at the other end thereof, such lamp being extended longitudinally of the hood in line with the lens, as set forth. I
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HIRAM E. DUNN.
