GEORGE M. URIE AND ANDREW A. 'MARKAM, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
TELEPHONE TABLET ATTACHMENT.
EEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 745,978, dated December 1, 1903.
Original application filed August 15, 1902, Serial No. 119,759. N0.143,875.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE M. URIE and ANDREW A. MAEKAM, citizens of the United States of America, residing in Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Telephone Tablet Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the drawings accompanying the same and forming a part thereof.
Our invention relates to improvements in telephone tablet attachments.
This application is divisional of an application for Letters Patent filed by us on August 15, 1902, having Serial No. 119,759. In said prior application we have shown and described different mechanism, including the mechanism described and claimed in this present application, by means of which a tablet could be adjusted to different positions upon a support provided with means for attachment to the frame of a telephone.
The object of the present invention is to provide means by which the tablet may be adjusted to different angles upon the support and also to different vertical positions thereon. Our invention provides, further, interlocking means by which the tablet is firmly held upon the support in the position in which it may be adjusted. It provides, further, certain novel means by which the support may be mounted upon a telephone-frame. Other features of novelty are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate our invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing our tablet attachment mounted upon a telephone-frame adapted to be secured upon the wall. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the dotted line a Z) of Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the bracket and parts employed to clamp the telephone-frame,the clamping mechanismbeing of the form shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation view of the bracket and the modified form of clamping mechanism used for securing the device to a desk-telephone frame. In this view the bracket is shown partly in vertical section. Fig. 5 is a plan Divided and this application filed February 16, 1903. Serial (No model.)
view of the parts shown in Figs. 2 and 4. Fig. 6 is an elevation view of the bracket looking at the side provided with the interlocking means.
Similar characters of reference indicate similar parts.
1 indicates the tablet, which may be of any desired shape, preferably rectangular, and provided on its under side with two arms 2, between which is secured a horizontal shaft 3, upon which is mounted a roll of paper 4. Near the upper end of the tablet is provided a transverse slot 5, and near the lowerend is provided a similar slot 6 parallel therewith. Upon the tablet is mounted a transverse tension-strip 7, the ends of which engage the sides of the tablet. The particular construction of the tablet and roll supporting mechanism being fully described in the aforesaid prior application and not being herein claimed, it is not deemed necessary to further describe the said mechanism. The paper is drawn through the slots 5 and 6 and under the tension member 7. An angular bracket 8, provided with a horizontal portion and a vertical portion, is secured by the horizontal portion to the under side of the tablet 1. vertical portion of the bracket is provided with two holes, extending horizontally therethrough, one above the other. Radially extending from each of said holes, on the left side of the bracket as viewed in Fig. 2, are a series of grooves adapted to engage with projections on one of the clamping members, to be described later. Said grooves are indicated by the numeral 9, the holes in the vertical portion of the bracket being indicated by 10.
In the form of our invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2, 11 indicates a horizontal bolt, mounted upon the top 12 of the wall-telephone frame. At the left end of the said top as viewed in said Figs. 1 and 3 is provided one of the clamping members 13, the lower side of which is provided with a lip 14, adapted to engage the under side of the top 12. Above the said lip is provided a transverse hole in which is secured one end of the rod or bolt 11, the other end of which extends through a hori- The zontal hole provided in the other clamping member 15, which is also provided at its under side with an inwardly-extending lip 16, adapted to engage the under side of the top 12. The bolt 11 extends through one of the holes in the bracket and is provided at the right end with screw threads, on which end is fitted a nut 17, adapted to tightly clamp the bracket against the member 15. The member 15 is provided with two projections 18, adapted to enter two of the grooves 9 for preventing turningof the bracket on the bolt 11 after it has been adjusted to the proper position thereon. By loosening the nut 17 the bracket may be turned to the position desired and then secured in such position by tightening the nut 17. If the tablet is desired in the upper position, the bolt 11 is mounted in the lower hole 10, and in the upper hole 10 when it is desired to have the tablet in the lower position.
In the device to be used with desk-telephones the members 13 and 15 are provided each with a concave curved portion adapted to embrace the standard of the telephone. The two members are placed side by side and are secured together by a horizontal bolt 19,which is disposed in holes provided therefor in the said members. One end of the bolt 19 is screw-threaded and provided with a nut 20, adapted to bear upon the adjacent member. The member 15 is provided with a projection 21, adapted to enter a groove 22 in the opposite member for preventing movement of the clamping members with respect to each other. The member 15 in the form shown in Figs. 2 and at is provided with a horizontal screwthreaded extension 23, adapted to be inserted in one of the holes 10 of the bracket. The adjustment of the bracket on the said projection is secured in a manner similar to that described with reference to the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
It will thus be seen that our invention may be applied to the frames of wall or desk telephones with equal facility and proper vertical and circumferential adjustment of the bracket 8 upon the supporting mechanism attained. Our invention may be variously modified without departing from its spirit.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
