A TORNEY Patented November 3, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS M. WEILLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGAR-BAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,208, dated November 3, 1903.
Application iiled July l 5, l 903.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS N. WEILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city of New York,
l' State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Cigar-Band, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to removably secure a match to a cigar or other like article by means of an encircling band.
In the drawings, wherein I have illustrated a preferred form of my invention, Figure lis a.. perspective View of a cigar, showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the match removed and in position for striking. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of the band and cigar, showing the match in place; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of a portion of the band.
Similar reference characters are employed to denote like parts in all the views.
In the specific embodiment of my invention, which I have selected for purposes of illustration and descriptiomthe band A is constructed of paper or other flexible material suitable for the purpose and, as will be understood, may have printed or impressed thereon the name of the brand, the name of the manufacturer or factory of the particular brand of the article on which the band is used, or such other ornamentation or devices as may be desired. The band is usually formed with a somewhat enlarged body portion A and with end portions of sucient length to encircle the cigar and overlap to permit them to be fastened together in the usual manner, preferably by a suitable adhesive. AA layer of suitable material A2, Fig. 3, is interposed between the band and the cigar when the band is in place. Preferably, as shown, this interposed material is in the form of an extension or Hap-like piece made integrally with the body of the band and extending from the body portion of the band, so that it can be doubled back to project under the band and form a receptacle C, Fig. 3, for the head and a portion of the stick of the match D. The hand, as shown, is also provided with an opening or slit A3 just large enough to receive the match-stick. In the ,form of device illustratedthis opening A3 is formed in the body Serial No. 165,652. (No model.)
Y portion of the band opposite or in line with the iap A2, and the latter is made suiiiciently long to extend under the opening when doubled under the band.
Any suitable description of match may be used in connection with my invention; but I contemplate the employment of what are usually termed safety-matches, since in their manufacture no ingredient is employed which will deleleriously aiect the cigar, and I therefore provide a suitable striking-surface E upon the band, upon which the match may be ignited.
I prefer to form the band illustrated in the drawings because of the facility with which it and the match may be secured in place. This is easily and quickly accomplished by inserting the match-stick through the opening A3 and doubling back the flap A2 upon the match. The overlapping ends of the band are then brought together and fastened. Thus in position the match-head and a portion of the stick are eectively inclosed in the receptacle formed by the flap or piece A2 and the band, which thus serve to protect the match from moisture and prevent any contact between the match-head and the cigar to which the band is secured or the other cigars in the box. When it is desired to light the cigar, the match may be drawn endwise through the aperture A3 without destroying the band or injuring the cigar, which is protected from injury bythe match-head by the interposed or "iiap -like piece A2. As the match is almost completely concealed by the band and as the bands are fitted tightly to the cigars, the employment of my invention produces no marked change in the appearance of the cigars. They may be as conveniently carried in the consumers pocket and practically as compactly and attractively packed in boxes as Without the device.
While I have described and hereinafter refer to my invention as a cigar-band, it is to be understood that it may be employed on other like articles-such, for instance, as cheroots--and I use the term cigar generically to include all such articles.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isa
