WILLIAM MASTERS, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
REVERSIBLE ENVELOP OR WRAPPER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 700,352, dated May 20, 1902. Application filed June 22,1901. Serial No. 65,581. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MASTERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reversible Envelops or Wrappers, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to fastening devices for reversible envelops; andthe object of my invention is to produce a double fastener or one having two tongues which are inserted together through the eyelets in the flaps and are then bent flat in opposite directions forsecuring the flaps in closed position.
I will now proceed to describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings,
in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an envelop constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the envelop unfolded. Fig. 3 is a detached View of the form of fastener shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the fastener being unbent or flattened out. Fig. 4 shows two edgewise end views of the envelop, the fasteningtongues being extended in opposite directions in said views.
- As shown in Fig. 2, this envelop comprises a central portion 3 for the addresses, two end flaps 4 and 9, and two triangular side flaps 6 6. All of said flaps may be folded against either face of the central portion 3upon the dotted lines in-Fig. 2. One of the end flaps 4 and the side flaps 6 6 are each provided with an eyelet 7, and said eyelets are so located that they registerwith one another when the flaps are folded together. In the other end flap 9 a semicircular cutis made, as shown in Fig. 2, and the semicircular flap 10 formed by said out is folded back upon the flap 9, forming an openingS. A flexible metallic fastener 5 has a foot portion 5, which is held between flaps 9 and'lO, while-its two tongues 5 project through an opening in the fold of flap 10, which is glued or pasted to the flap 9, thereby retaining the fastener securely in position in a simple manner. In either direction in whichthe flaps of the envelop are folded (the flap 9 being folded first and one of flaps 6 last) the tongues may be inserted through thethree eyelets 7, as shown in Fig. 1, and then bent fiat, thus securing the envelop. Fig. 4 shows the tongues 5 as bent 1 outwardly from either side of theflap 9. The address ofthe sender may be printed on one side of the central portion 3, while the opposite side thereof is left blank for the name of the addressee.
The above-described construction may be applied to wrappers as well as to envelope by making all of the flaps of sufficient length and width to pass around the package and have the eyelets register with the fastening I device.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a reversible envelop or wrapper comprising four flaps, three of said flaps having a perforation in each, an opening in the flap not so perforated, and a flexible metallic fastener secured to said flap and projectinginto said opening when unbent, said fastener comprising a middle foot portion 5 and a pair of I r tongues 5, and being so located with respect to the perforations in the other flaps that said tongues may be inserted through all of said perforations, when the envelop is folded in either direction, substantially as described.
2. A reversible envelop or wrapper comforations '7, a flap 9, a flap 10 cut therefrom and folded back upon said flap 9, leaving an opening 8, and a flexible metallic fastener comprising a middle foot portion 5" and a pair said flaps 9 and 10, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature w in the presence of two witnesses.
