Description

No. 656,677. Patented Aug. 28, I900.
H. J. STRAKER.
CHAIN.
(Application filed Jan. 3, 1900.)
Ilwrrnn STATES PATENT Crnrcn.
HERBERT J. STRAKER, OF ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE K. WEBSTER, OF SAME PLACE.
CHAIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,677, dated August 28, 1900. Application filed January 3, 1900. Serial No. 232. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT J. STRAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chains, of which the following is a specification', reference being had therein to the ac companying drawings. I
My invention relates particularly to that class of chains which are used in the construction of bracelets; and it consists in the novel construction of their parts.
My purpose is to so construct the chainlinks as to produce a light-weight chain or one free from the indentations which now characterize this class of chains.
It is now customary to engage the links of bracelet-chains before curbing or twisting the same, as has always been done in the manufacture of other kinds of chains. The twisting operation always results in an indentation of the links at their points of engagement. Again, very thin stock is not now utilized for this purpose, because of its incapacity to sustain the torsional strain.
. I attain the objects of my invention by the construction hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a side view of my completed links in engagement; Fig. 2, a perspective view of a struck blank; Figs. 3 and 4, like views of the respective link-sections. -Fig. 5 is a sectional View of a completed link on line 00 a: of Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 shows the plan of a cast of the die by which the blank in Fig. 2 is shaped.
In the above figures, A is a blank of thin stock struck by a die whose outline is shown as B in Fig. 5, which has an irregularlyswelled or billowy surface, with an oblong ring 0 in relief thereon, said ring being bounded on its exterior and interior by slight elevations or shoulders s and s. It will be noted that the resulting impression upon the blank A is an oblong ring a, with exterior and inte:
parted by the die.
rior adjacent shoulders b and b, all in relief upon a blank, of which they are a part, whose surface partakes of the irregular swell im- The section a, with its bounding shoulders or flanges b h, is next ,cut from the blank A in the usual manner. By a similar process, using a die which has no shoulder, I produce a link-section a which differs from section a only in the omission of the shoulders or flanges b b.
I assemble and solder the link-sections a and 0t by joining the edges of the section a to the corresponding flanged edges of a in such a position that the latter slightly overlaps the former and forms a soldering-face. These completed links may be engaged in the usual manner, which consists in transversely sawing each alternate link and sol dering the joints after being sprung into en gagement. The resulting chain, as shown in Fig. 1, presents a twisted or curbed appearance without the necessity of further manipulation. a
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. A chain having links composed of two concavo convex longitudinal link sections, each section struck up with a half-twist havin g their respective adjacent edges united by solder, as andfor the purpose set forth.
2. A chain having links composed of two concavo -convex longitudinal link-sections, each section struck up with a half-twist and one of said sections having its edges bounded by a continuous flange and both sections joined by solder as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERBERT J. srRAKER.
