HOOK AND EYE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,819, dated April 21, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EMMA M. D. LANDEN- BERGER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan View of the hook and eye, the eye being attached to a garment. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the hook shown as it would appear attached to a garment. Fig. 3 is a section through the center of the hook and eye connected with each other and attached to a garment. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the hook as it would appear when made of wire, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the eye as it would appear when made of wire and attached to a garment.

This invention relates to certain improvements in hooks and eyes for garments, which improvements are fully set forth and explained in the following specification and claims.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the eye, made, preferably, of a piece of flat metal stamped so as to cut two slits in such manner as to form between said slits a center portion 13 of the body-plate A, the latter being crimped in its portion adjacent to said center portion B. Said center portion B has its entire rear portion connected with the plate A, but its forward end is connected to said plate by means of the central neck N, so as to form the shoulders P at either side of said neck. The said center portion B is elevated to be on a higher plane than the body-plate A, so that the hook G can pass between said plate A and said center elevated portion B. Said eye-plate A is intended to be sewed to a garment K, by means of passing the thread through the eye-slots F, located in each end of said plate, so that each end of the plate may be secured to the garment, thus leaving no loose ends to catch on the clothing or other objects.

arms for permitting the parts of said hook adjacent to said recess to pass under the raised portion B and over the sides of plate A, so that said arms II, which are longitudinally crimped or curved downward, as shown in Fig. 3, may pass over the crimps D in said plate A in order to prevent separation of the hook and eye. Said hook is formed so as to have the integral cross-bar J for being inserted in the hem of the garment, as shown in broken lines in Fig. 2, in which figure the manner of attaching the hook to the garment is shown, the bar J being placed in the hem and the arms 11 being sewed down on the margin of the fold in the garment, so as to leave no loose ends for catching on objects. Said bar J being placed in the hem of the garment preserves the perpendicular or straight line of the garment, and its bearing against the fold of the hem relieves the thread with which the hook is secured to the garment from strain and prevents the hook from tearing loose from the garment.

The hook and eye may be made of wire, as

shown in Figs. 4 and 5, if desired, as in such construction the same general features are preserved and the same result is produced.

The hook and eye when attached to the garment and hooked together appear as shown in Fig. 5).

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

1. In a hook and eye, the eye formed of a flat metal plate A, adapted to have each end secured to the garment, and stamped so as to out through it two slits or openings so as to form between them a center portion B elevated to be on a higher plane than said plate, and connected at its rear end its entire width with said bod y-plate, and centrally connected 'at its forward end with said plate by means of the neck N forming shoulders P at either side of said neck on said center portion, said plate A having the crimps or bends D adjacent to the sides of said center B, substan tially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a hook and eye the hook G formed of a fiat metal plate having the laterally-extending arms H adapted to be secured to the garment, and having the cross-bar J adapted to be placed in the garment-hem, and having the recess 0, for permitting said hook to extend under said raised portion 13 substantially 10 as and for the purpose set forth.
