EMERSON A. GILBERT, OF
FRAM E FOR COATING JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK.
ARISTOTYPE-PAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming party of Letters Patent No. 463,037, dated November 10, 1891.
Application filed May 25, 1891.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMERSON A. GILBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Framesfor Coating Aristotype-Paper, of which the following is so full, clear, and exact a description as will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the two sections separated; and Fig. 2 is a section on the lines it 0: in Fig. 1, showing the two sections in position as when clamped together.
The object of my invention is to provide a frame by the use of which the paper to be treated will be held perfectly smooth and firm and the emulsion may be poured on and off from the top without its being able to creep in at the edges and smear the wrong side of the paper or frame.
In the accompanying drawings, A designates the lower section of the frame, which is provided with pins b, which serve as guides for the paper when it is first placed in position on said lower section before the frame is clamped together. The inner edge of the lower section is provided with a projecting rim 0, which extends in an unbroken ridge around the inner edge of the same, withthe exception of a slight opening or cut-away portion D in one corner. Diagonally opposite thiscorner is a similar opening which extends down through said lower section outside of the projecting rim G, and this opening is designated by the letter E.
The upper section of the frame is designated by the letter F, and it is provided with openings which register with the openings D and E, respectively, on the lower section. It is also provided with perforations G, which are for the reception of the pins b. The outer edge of the section F is also provided with projecting pins Ii, which are adapted to be engaged by the projecting points I of the pivotal clamps J. The clamps J J are limited in their backward movement by stops K K on the frame. By the provision of a device of Serial No. 394,073. (No model.)
this sort the most satisfactory results may be obtained and time and labor saved.
I prefer to use the style of opening at the corner designated by the letter D; but it is quite apparent that the opening E may be used instead without departing from the spirit of my invention and without in any way interfering with its usefulness. The pins 1) b will form guides to determine the proper position for the paper before the sections of the frame are clamped together. The clamps J, which are always in an elevated position, also form guides for the upper section and enable the operator to press it down and keep the lowersection ina proper position in the shortest possible time and with the least inconvenience or liability of displacing the paper. The paper is punctured at the corner with a pencil or other instrument to permit the emulsion to escape.
I wish it distinctly understood that I reserve the right to use either of the openings shown in the corners.
Each of the sections of the frame is composed of side rails B B and end rails D D and the vertical openings through the frame are at the junction of the rails on the line between the outer and inner angles a and b respectively, formed by the meeting ends of the side and endrails.
Having described my invention, what I therefore claim is A frame for coating paper, made in two sections adapted to be clamped together to hold the paperbetween them, one of said sections having a vertical opening extending through it at the junction of one of the end rails and one of the side rails thereof, and also provided with a rim which is adapted to fit within the other section of the frame, which latter section is provided with a vertical opening which registers with the vertical opening in the first section, and locking-catches for securing the sections of the frametogether,
substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EMERSON A. GILBERT. \Vitnesses:
CHARLES M. WAITE, CHARLES M. I-IERRIOK.
