2765x969 .1772/6)? for U TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST H. HINES, OF NEIV ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN B. SCHMIDT, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED BRIDGE AND TAIL-PIECE FOR GUITARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,554, dated November 3, 1891.
Application filed June 6, 1891. Serial No. 395,413. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST HENRY HINEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bridge and Tail-Piece for Guitars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will ena able others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in a combined bridge and tail-piece for guitars, and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in connection with the annexed drawings; and theobjects of my invention are to increase the sound in playing a guitar or mandolin. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a top View. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a rear view. Fig. i is a sectional top view. Fig. 5 is a sectional side view.
; Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, A refers to a bridge having a metal rest for strings, as shown by B, and also a concave construction, as shown by O,
through'which the strings are inserted and are fastened as shown by O in Fig. 5. Passing through the sides of the bridge, as shown in Fig. 4, are the ends of tail-piece D, said ends E being threaded, and upon which are placed nuts, as shown by F, and which enable tail-piece D to be securely attachedto bridge A. G is a rest placed on the end ofa guitar, as shown in Fig. 5, and upon which the tail-piece is .placed when fastened to binding-screw H,
K showing strings of guitar, and L designat- 40 in g the latter.
In practice the strings are attached to the bridge A in the manner shown in Figs. 4 and 5 and rest upon metal piece B, while the tailpiece D, which consists of a heavy wire ornamented asmay be desired is attached to the bridge in the manner shown in Fig. 4, thus forming a'much less cumbersome bridge and tail-piece, and when placed upon a guitar or mandolin enables a much better sound to be made in playing the instrument.
A striking ad vantage of my invention is its economical construction and ease by which a guitar may be played.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The herein-described combined bridge and tail-piece for guitars, having a metal rest for strings and an opening for inserting same, the tail-piece formed of a single wire having the ends thereof threaded and passing through the bridge and held to same by suitable means, as set forth.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in 6 5 presence of two witnesses.
I AUGUST H. HINES.
Witnesses:
