Description

No. 45,354- IATENTED DEC. 6, 1864. A. S. SOLOMONS. MANIFOLD WRITING BOOK.
m: m-mms PETERS co, vHoYo-u'ma. wumnurom u. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. S. SOLOMONS, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
MANIFOLD-WRITING BOOK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 45,354, dated December 6,1864.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that 1, A. S. SoLoMoNs, of the c'ty of 'ashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and Improved Manifold-Writing Book, Especially Designed and Adapted as an Order-Book for the Use of Army Otlioers in the Field and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partot' this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved manifold-writing book, representing it as closed; Fig. 2, a similar view representing the book as open and the sliding top of the paper case partially withdrawn; Fig. 3, a section in the line .10 wot" Fig. 1,and Fig. 4 a. sec-- tion in theline 3 yet Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
My invention has for its object the combination, in a compact and portable form, of the material for duplicating writings, especially orders and instructions of otficers of the army; and it consists, first, in the combination ot'a suitable case for-containing carbonized paper, with one of the covers of a book of leaves of prepared tissue or other suitable thin transparent paper; and, secondly, in the combina- IlOU of a stylus and pencil. with such a book.
The case, combined with the inside of one cover, A, of a book of prepared tissue-paper, is formed of a metallic frame, B, riveted or otherwise secured to the cover, having flanges a a projecting inwardly parallel with the cover, and at such a distance above it as to admitof the insertion of a number of sheets of carbonized paper under them. A sliding top, 0, is slipped under the flanges a a, as shown in FigsI-Z, 3, and 4, and serves as cover for the case, securing and fully protecting and preserving from injury the carbonized paper placed therein.
A pencil, D, provided at one end with ahard point, 0, of bone, agate, or metal, is combined with the cover A, by means of the loops d d, as is customary in memorandum-books.
The under side of the slide (J is lined with carbonized paper, and when it is desired to write but a single copy of an order or memorandom, this slide is placed, with the carbon.
ized side uppermost, under one leaf of the book, and the required characters traced on the leaf by means of the style.
It duplicate copies are desired, sheets, of the carbonized paper are inserted between as many leaves of the book as there are copies required, the slide being placed beneath them all to serve as a tablet, when, with proper pressure upon the style or pencil, the characters traced thereby upon the uppermost leaf will be. repeated upon each leaf below it in contact with the carbonized sheets.
-Flaps c e of plain paper are secured to the sides of the case A, under the side flanges, to retain the sheets of carbonized paperjn place when the slide 0 is removed.
The written leaves may be readily detached from the book by placing the slide across the bottom thereof, immediately below vthe slits f f out i n.the margins of each, and tearing them gently out.
A pocketinay be advantageously combined with the inside of the cover E of the book, in which to retain copies of orders written and other papers.
It will be observed on reference to Figs. 3 and 4 that the case adds but very little to the thickness of the book.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. Combining with one cover of a manifoldwriting book a suitable case for containing carbonized paper, substantially in the mannerherein set forth.
2. When case-having a removable sliding top C, is combined with one cover of a manifoh -writing book, as is herein desecribed, lining one side of said sliding top 0 with carbonized paper in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
3. The united stylus and lead-pencil D, when combined with a manifold-writing book, substantially in the manner and for the pur pose herein set forth.
A. S. SOLOMONS.
