Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
S. S. JACKSON, OF CINCINNATI. OHIO.
KNIFE Foa NURSERY-MEN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,996, dated August 30, 1864.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, S. S. JACKSON, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Cutter or Knife for the Use of Nursery-Men and others; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Fignre 1 is a side view of my invention, Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This inventionrelates to a new and improved knife, designed more especially for the use of nursery-men in preparing cuttings for the propagating of plants and other purposes.
The invention consists in the employment or use of a standard provided with inclined or beveled surface and having a knife iitted in it and working on a fulcrum-pin, the above parts being used with a stop-spring and pad, in such a manner that the cuttings may be prepared in avery expeditious manner, and without being bruised or injured in the least, and the parts rendered capable of always being kept in perfect working-order without any trouble whatever.
A represents a bed-piece, which is firmly bolted or otherwise secured to a bench or any proper support, and has a standard, B, secured to it composed of two equal vertical parts, a a, connected together by screws b.
C represents a knife or cutter, which is secured by screws c in a slot, d, made in a bent bar, D, the latter being tted between the two parts a a of thestandard B and upon a fulcrum-pin, e.
The part of the bar D to which the knife or cutter C is attached extends obliquely upward by the standard B, and the latter, directly opposite the former,is also made oblique or inclined, as shown at f, so as to be parallel with the cutting edge of the knife or cutter when the latter is brought up toward f. (See Fig. l.)
Between the two parts a a of the standard above the bar D there is inserted a piece of wood, g, and a pad, h, formed of india-rubber or other suitable material, is placed against the wood g, at the oblique or inclined surface f of B, to receive the cutting-edge of Athe knife or cutter in order to preserve said edge.
E is an upright pin or rod, which is screwed into the bed-piece A, and serves as a stop for the knife or cutter C, said pin or rod by b eing screwed into the bed-piece A being capable of being adjusted, so that the bar D when pressed down will strike it atthe time when the knife or cutter C iir'st comes in contact with the part h.
Fis a spring, which is attached to the bedpiece A, and bears against the under side of the bar D, said spring having a tendency to keep the bar D forced upward and the knife or cutter C out from the pad h.' The bar D may have a wooden handle, G, fitted upon it, and to this handle a rope or chain, H, is attached, which passes down through the bedpiece, and may be connected to a treadle.
In forcing down the bar D the knife or cutter C approaches the pad h, and severs the cutting, which is placed between the knife or cutter and the pad h.
In consequence of having the upper part of the standard B made beveled or inclined, and the knife or cutter arranged relatively with it as shown, the operator is enabled to adjust the cutting properly between the knife or cutter and the pad. The cut also is made smooth and clean, and the cutting not bruised or injured in the least.
The device may be operated either by hand or foot, and the knife or cutter made to operate at all times without any lateral play by screwing up the two parts a a of the standard B, whenever there is a looseness occasioned by wear.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The knife or cutter C, attached to a curved bar, D, in connection with a standard, B, provided with an oblique or inclined snr-- face, f, and the fulerum-pin e, on which the knife-bar Dis fitted, as and for the purpose standard thus constructed is used in comspecified. bination with the knife-bar D, as and for the 2. The adjustable pin or rod E, fitted in the purpose specied. i bed-piece A, when used in combination with A the knife bar- D and standard B, for the purpose set forth.
3. Constructing the standard B i'n two partsfa a, connected by screws b, when said S. S. JACKSON.
Witnesses F. PENTLAND, W. OHAsEY.
