H. E. MESSIMER. ATTAGHING DEVICE FOR SUSBENDEB. STRAPS.
Patented Aug. 2'7, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY E. MESSIMER, OF \VILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
ATTACHING DEVICE FOR SUSPENDER-STRAPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,694, dated August 27, 1889.
Application filed February 16, 1889. Elerial No. 800,139. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY E. MESSIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVilliamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Devices for Suspender-Straps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a new article of manufacture, consisting of a novel clamping device for attaching the trousers-straps of suspenders to the buckles of the same, or in some instances directly to the'texture of the suspenders, as in the case of the back tron sers-straps.
By the use of myinvention there is no danger of the trousers-supporting straps becoming disengaged from the buckles or the suspenders, when, for instance, one end of the supporting-straps is accidentally detached from the trousers, since the trousers-straps are tightly clamped by means of the device forming the subject of the present application; also, when by accident one end of the trousers-straps become detached from the trousers the unequal strain on the clamping device will not alter its symmetry.
The device is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved attaching device, showing the same in position; Fig. 2, a side elevation, partly in section, of the same; Fig. 3, an elevation of the clamping device, showing alink attachment thereto; and Fig. 4, an elevation of a clamping device for the rear trousers-straps.
The clamping device is made, preferably, of circular wire, though it should be understood that this is not an indispensable requisite, and is formed into the yoke-shaped body or main portion A, with the upper section thereof made in a curved form, as shown. The lower ends of this yoke-shaped main portion are formed into loops B B, preferably by bending the material back on itselfjand then bending the ends of the wire circularly around such main portion, as illustrated in the drawings, so that the loops thus formed are very strong and rigid. Each of these loops B B surrounds the upper portion of one of the inclined extensions of the trousersstraps. The construction of these trousers-straps is immaterial; but I prefer to make them of a single piece, with the ends secured together at the point a, preferably by means of a metallic clamp b, and with the button holes near the ends of each oblique extension.-
gaged from the trousers, there will beno change in the form of the device by reason of the two loops B B tending to separate, caused by the unequal strain of the main yoke-shaped portion A, I have made use of a link 0, connecting the lower extremity of the loops BB, so that there can be no possibility of the said loops becoming separated. lVhile this link is a useful element by tending to preserve the symmetrical shape of the clamping device, it is not absolutelynecessary, and can be dispened with.
The device just describedi. a, one provided with a curved yoke-shaped main portionis adapted especially for use on the forward trousers-straps. The device for the rear trousers-straps is very similar, except that the main portion is made flattened or triangular shaped, so as to offer a convenient horizontal bar 6 for the attachment of the suspenders in any convenient manner, but preferably by doubling the material of the suspenders over the said bar, and then sewing the material.
Having now described my inventiomwhat I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a clamping device for the purpose mentioned,
and the link 0, connecting said loops, sub- 10 stantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY E. MESSIMER.
