Description

(No Model.)
A. GOERTZ.
BELT BUCKLE. No. 403,263. Patented May 14, 1889.
WITNESSES: I/II/EIVTOR,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST GOERTZ, OF NEWVARK, NEWV JERSEY.
BELT-BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 403,263, dated May 14, 1889.
Application filed November 28, 1888- erial No. 292,068. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST Gonnrz, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles for Belts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved buckle for ladies and other belts, by which the free end of the belt can be clamped in an effective manner without injuring the end of the belt and without requiring the perforating of the same for the tongue or other locking device of the buckle and the invention consists of a buckle for belts, which is composed of a main plate provided .at both ends with guide-slots, a raised rib parallel with said guide-slots, and with bent-up ears which are made integral with the main plate and to which a cam-plate is pivoted that binds on the end of the belt placed over the rib, so as to rigidly retain the same in position after it has been passed through the guide-slots and below the pivoted cam-plate of the buckle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front View of my improved buckle, shown as applied to a belt. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on line at m, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a front view of the buckle with the free end of the belt removed therefrom.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to th e drawings, A represents the main plate of my improved buckle, which is made of square or other shape and attached, by means of prongs a a, that are punched out of the body of the plate, permanently to one end of the belt B. The prongs a a pierce the belt and are clinched at the back of the same, so as to firmly retain the main plate A at four or more points on the end of the belt B. The main plate A is provided at both ends with guide-slots C O, which are formed by-guidepieces C Q-that are made integral with the main plate and bent forward so as to be parallel with the same at such a distance as to permit the convenient passage of the free end of the belt through the guide-slots G O. The main plate A is further provided, near one guide-slot O, with a raised rib, D, which is parallel with the guide-slots C, said rib serving, in connection with a cam-plate, E, to firmly clamp the free end of the belt after the same is passed through the guide-slots C O and below the cam-plate E, as shown in Fig. 2. The cam-plate E is pivoted by a transverse pin, 6, to ears e, that are made integral with the main plate and bent up at right angles to the same near the rib D, the cam-plate swing ing on said ears either toward or away from the main plate A, so as to clamp or release the free end of the belt B, as required.
As my improved buckle consists of only three pieces, the main plate A, the cam-plate E, and the transverse pivot pin c, it forms a very simple and reliable device for connecting the ends of a belt, while it may be manufactured at comparatively low price, as the main plate, with its guide-pieces e, rib D, ears e, and prongs a, is punched and stamped by suitable dies. The free end of the belt is tightly clamped by the rib of the main plate and the pivoted cam-plate without being unduly stretched or injured and without requiring the perforating of the free end of the belt for the buckle and tongue.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A buckle for belts, composed of a main plate provided with guide-slots at both ends, fastening prongs made integral with said plate, a raised rib in said plate parallel with said slots, bent-up ears, also made integral with the plate, and a canrplate pivoted to said ears close to said rib, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUST GOERTZ.
