164/207 B22c 15/02 ABSTRACT: Jolting apparatus for compacting sand in a l64/37,40, foundry mold, wherein a fluid motor is utilized to rapidly reciprocate a rapper member to impart impact blows to a table supporting the mold pattern.
[51] Int. [50] Field of 172, 173, 177, 181, 182, 183, 185, 193, 194, 195, 207, 209, 212, 284, 385, 409; 164/206 SHEET 1 BF 2 ATTORNEY PATENTED m m f \KMW k: \l R I EL W/l vN FIG-5 INVENTOE LESTER c. YOUNG ATTOENEY FIG-Z BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION .lolting apparatus for compacting sand or similar material in a molding flask has been previously used, including the use of a fluid motor for rapidly reciprocating the joltin'g or rapping member. Reference 'may be had to my U.S. Pat. No. 3,270,375, .lolting Mechanism for Foundry Apparatus, issued Sept. 6, 1966, for a disclosure of a molding apparatus of this general type. The present invention involves certain modifications and improvements thereon. Molds presently are increasing in size and weight and it is necessary to utilize massive rapper members to aid in compacting the sand against the face of the pattern.
This presents design, manufacturing, and maintenance problems with respect to the jolting apparatus.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The jolting apparatus of my invention makes possible the use of a large .rapper member and is constructed so as to minimize maintenance and to simplify design.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is an elevational view partially in section of a foundryapparatus constructed inaccordance with my invention;
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Looking now to FIG. I of the drawings, depicts foundry apparatus including a table member 12 having a horizontal rectangular portion 14, with a vertical stem 16 secured to the center thereof. Stern 16 is threaded at its upper. end, and is secured to the tabletop by nut 17. A base support 18 is provided for supporting the deadweight mass of the table and whatever load might be carried on the surface thereof. The table is resiliently supported by the base 18 through the medium of springs 20 to enable the table and load to react more effectively from the series of rapper impact blows which are transmitted to the table by a fluid motor which will be described in more detail hereinafter.
The stem 16 has an outer surface 22 which coacts with a mass or rapper member 24 which is slideably mounted thereon. Secured to the lower end of stem 16 by means of bolts 25 is a piston 26. Surrounding piston 26 and slideably coacting therewith is cup-shaped member 28. Member 28 is bolted to rapper member 24. The piston 26 and cup-shaped member 28 form first and second chambers 30 and 32 located above and below the piston, respectively.
A pressure source 34 supplies air under pressure to chamber 32 by way of passages 36, 38, ports 40, 42, and 44, and passageway 46. The pressure source 34 includes a valve 48 and a throttle valve 50. The introduction of pressurized air into chamber 32 causes the cup-shaped member 28 along with rapper member 24 to move downwardly from a first position shown in FIG. 1 to a second position shown in FIG. 2. Ports 52 located in the sidewall of cupshaped member 28 are provided for exhausting fluid from chamber 32 when member 28 is in its second or lower position. Chamber 32 is simultaneously cut off from pressure source 34 as ports and 42 move out of alignment with each other. Another passageway consisting of passages 54, 56, and 58 introduces air into upper chamber 30 from a pressure source 60, which includes a valve 62, an adjustable pressure reducer valve 64, and an adjustable speed control valve 66.
It can be seen that as the cup-shaped member 28 and attached rapper member 24 move from the position shown in FIG. l to the position shown in FIG. 2, the volume of upper chamber 30 is greatly reduced, resulting in compression of the 7 air in this chamber. With simultaneous pressure exhaustion from chamber 32, the downward movement is stopped and reversed by the force exerted in chamber 30, resulting in an upward movement of the cup-shaped member 28 and attached rapper member 24 back toward the position of FIG. 1. The rapper member 24 thus imparts a sharp impact blow to the lower surface of the table 12. As soon as the impact has been imparted to the table, the cycle is rapidly repeated, at a rate in the range of 600 to 720 impacts perminute. To stop the oscillation of the rapper member 24, valve 48 is closed, which cuts off the air supply to chamber 32.
FIG. -3 illustrates an alternative embodiment of the invention which utilizes two stem members 80 and 82 attached to the tabletop. The threaded upper ends of the stems are secured to the tabletop by means of nuts, and the lower ends are secured to a piston in the same manneras illustrated in FIG. 1. In other respects, the rapper assembly is essentially the same as that shown in FIG. 1; This dual stern arrangement gives added guiding support for the rapper member. It also gives added strength to the piston secured to the bottom thereof.
From the above, it can be seen that the jolting apparatus of both of the embodiments can make use of heavy, large-sized rapper members. Because of the fact that the cup-shaped member 28 and the piston 26 are bolted to the rapper member 24 and the stem 16,'respectively, any size rapper member, piston, and cylinder can be easily installed when the machine is initially built. This is of particular advantage due to the interrelationship of the rapper weight, rapper size, and the piston size needed for a specified jolting action on a table of a given size and loaded weight. Furthermore, if a jolting apparatus is to be used with a number of different table loads, the cup-shaped member, piston, and rapper members can be quickly and easily replaced by other sized members.
Another advantage of the present jolting apparatus is the ease with which it can be disassembled for repair or maintenance purposes. By loosening nut 17, the tabletop can be removed, allowing ready access and removal of the rest of the apparatus contained within the supporting base.
While it will be apparent that the embodiments of the invention herein disclosed is well calculated to fulfill the objects of the invention, it will be appreciated that the invention is susceptible to modifications, variations, and changes without departing from the proper scope or fair meaning of the subjoined claims.
