6F SAME PLACE.
TAMBQURlNE.
'ZCISTFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 347,512, dated August 17, 1886.
Application filed March 8,1586. Serial No. 194,359. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES N. Pos'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, countyoi'Gook, and State ofillinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Tambourincs and Banjos, ol which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide novel, simplified, and efiicient means for ad- 10 j usting and holding down what is commonly known as the stretching or straining ring or band of a tambourine. The said invention is, however, also applicable to banjos.
It consists in a tension-hook applied on the Outer side of the hoop, and provided with an eye, which enters a recess in the hoop, and a screw arranged to enter said hoop from its lower or rear edge and engage the eye of the tension-hook. By turning the screw the tension-hook can be readily adjusted and the head rendered more or less tight upon the hoop or body of the instrument. Among other advantages of this device are that the adjusting screws for operating the adjustinghooks are only visible at points along the lower edge of the hook, and they have simply an. ordinary rounded screw-head do not detract from the appearance of the instrument.
The invention is fully illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a transverse section, and Fig.
' 3, a detail, all illustrating the practical application of this invention to a tambourine, it
being understood, however, that it is equally applicable to a banjo.
In said drawings, A designates the hoop, I the head, and U the stretching-rim of a tambourine. The stretching or tension hook O engages the stretching-rim, as is usual in this class of devices, but is provided with an eye, C, which enters a recess, E, formed through the hoop.
F indicates the adj usting-scrcw that is our ployed for adjusting the tension-hook. This screw enters therim at its back or lower edge, 5 passes up through the recess, and engages the eye of the tensioirhook, said eye being screwthreadcd, so that by turning the screw the tension-hook can be adjusted.
It will be observed that thebearings for the adjusting screw are above and below the recess, thus making a simplified arrangement for disposing of the adj Listing-screw.
Nhat I claim as my invention is As an improved means for tightening the 5 head of a tambourine or banjo, the tension hook provided with an eye arranged to enter arecess in the hoop, combined with an adj usting-screw passing up through the hoop and engaging the eye of the tension-hook, substantially as described.
