Sewing Machine Co., New York, N.Y., a corporation of New York Filed Feb. 9, 1968, Ser. No. 704,414 Int. Cl. D051) 29/06 US. Cl. 112--235 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A presser foot for an industrial sewing machine, the presser foot having sidewardly adjustable pads underneath for selectively controlling the width of the cord groove in the presser foot, thus eliminating the need to use different feet for different size cords.
The invention relates generally to industrial sewing machines. More specifically, it relates to presser feet for industrial sewing machines such as 95 cl., 96 01., 241 cl., 251 01., 281 cl., 400W, 600W and 31-15. Also for all 111W and 211W series needle feed and walking foot machines.
It is generally well known to those skilled in the art,
-that when a relatively narrow cord or other round object is being sewn, the foot on the sewing machine must have a radial groove to accept the material. Often times, cords will vary greatly in size necessitating the use of many different size feet. This invention eliminates this need and saves time and money by incorporating these different size feet into one multi-purpose foot. All adjustments are made while the foot is in the sewing position by simply loosening two screws and sliding the pads in either direction to widen or reduce the size of the groove.
Accordingly, it is a principal object of the present invention to provide presser feet for all types of industrial sewing machines as well as adapting it for the general use of the needle trades.
Other objects are to provide presser feet having the above objects which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efiicient in operation.
This invention can be manufactured with adjustable pads on both toes of the foot or on either the left or right toe only, depending on the machine used and the sewing operation involved.
The above and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view shown partly in cross section, illustrating a presser foot incorporating the present invention.
FIG. 2 is an exploded perspective view showing the parts comprising the present invention.
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the presser foot showing the foot pads in a relatively far spread apart position.
FIG. 4 is a similar view showing the foot pads in a relatively close apart position.
FIG. 5 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken on line 5-5 of FIG. 4.
FIG. 6 is a perspective view, partly in cross section, of the present invention shown adapted for a multi-needle sewing machine presser foot.
FIG. 7 is a perspective view, partly in cross section of a modified form of the invention wherein only a single pad is used to control the needle slot width, and
3,463,104 Patented Aug. 26, 1969 FIG. 8 is a cross sectional view of a multi-needle sewing machine presser foot incorporating the principal illustrated in FIG. 7 wherein one pad controls each slot width.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, and more particularly first to FIGS. 1 to 5, the reference numeral 10 represents a presser foot with adjustable welting pads for industrial sewing machines, according to the present invention wherein there is a presser foot 11 that is suitably shaped at the top to receive a fixed portion of a sewing machine.
The presser foot includes a plurality of horizontally extending toes 16 separated by a needle slot 17 therebetween for receiving vertically movable needle 18 secured to needle bar 19.
In the present invention, a metal pad 20 is adjustably secured to the underside 21 of each toe 1 6 by means of screws 22 passed through transverse extending slots 23 in each toe; the screws being threadingly engaged within threaded openings 24 of the pads. Each screw includes a head 25 with screw driver slot 26, the head resting against the upper side 27 of the toes. As shown in FIG. 5, it will be noted that the screws do not project out of the underside 28 of the pads.
While the opposing sides 29 of each pad may be parallel to each other as shown in FIGS. 1 to 4, they may be arcuate if preferred, as shown in FIG. 5.
In operative use, when the cord 31 is stitched to the material 30, the groove, defined by the edges of the spaced pads 20, 20 to receive the cord 31 may not be wide enough. In such a case, the groove width is selectively widened by simply loosening the screws 22 and sliding the pads sidewardly a preferred distance, after which the screws are retightened to secure the pads in their new positions.
Thus a slot 32 of controlled width is established within which the needle must operate. Thus the needle rising upwardly after each stitch will not lift the material into the slot and cause the same to become bound therein.
In FIG. 6, a modified construction is shown wherein a presser foot 40 is adapted for a multi-needle sewing machine such as is used for shirring or the like. The presser foot includes a series of needle slots 41 for receiving needles 42. The toes 43 support pads 44 one of which is adjacent each side of each slot, it being thus noted that each intermediate toe thus carries two pads. The construction otherwise is as above described to permit slot width adjustability.
In FIG. 7, a further modified construction is shown wherein a single needle presser foot 50 is shown with a single slot 51 between the toes, and wherein the slot width is controlled by only one adjustable pad 52 carried by one of the toes 53. It will be noted that the other toe 54 is made accordingly thicker so that the lower side thereof is level with the lower side of the pad, so as to bear equal friction against the material moving therebetween and the sewing machine feed dog (not shown).
In FIG. 8, a further modified construction is shown wherein a multi-needle sewing machine presser foot 60 includes only one pad 61 for controlling each needle slot 62 between toes 63. Thus the principle shown in FIG. 7 is adapted for a multi-needle sewing machine presser foot. Here likewise one of the endmost toes 64 is made thicker so that the lower side thereof is level with the lower sides of the pads.
Thus there has been shown a novel method for controlling presser foot groove width to eliminate the use of different size grooved feet.
What is claimed is:
1. In a presser foot device for a sewing machine, the combination of a presser foot, a plurality of horizontally extending toes on said presser foot, said foot having groove means between said toes, means for adjustably controlling the width of said groove means, said means for adjustable control comprising a pair of transverse extending slots through a toe adjacent said groove means, a downwardly extending screw extending through each said transverse slot, the screw head of said screw being in abutment with an upper side of said toe, said screws threadingly engaged within threaded openings of a pad on the underside of said toe, said pad comprising a metal pad of elongated character and being positioned to selectively partly close or open access to said groove means.
2. The combination as set forth in claim 1, wherein said presser foot comprises a single needle presser foot with a pair of toes, the individual toes being parallel to each other, and said groove means comprising a single longitudinal groove between the toes, each of said toes having one of said pads therebeneath to control each side of said longitudinal groove.
3. The combination as set forth in claim 1, wherein said presser foot comprises a multi-needle presser foot with a series of said toes parallel to each other, and said groove means comprising a longitudinal groove between adjacent toes, all of said toes having said pads therebeneath to control each side of said longitudinal groove, the intermediate of said toes accordingly each supporting a pair of said pads one of which is for controlling an adjacent side of each adjacent longitudinal groove.
4. The combination as set forth in claim 1, wherein said presser foot comprises a single needle presser foot with a pair of said toes, the individual toes being parallel to each other, said groove means comprising a single longitudinal groove between the toes, one of said toes having said pad therebeneath to control one side of said longitudinal groove, and the other toe being made with a lower side that is level with a lower side of said pad.
5. The combination as set forth in claim 1, wherein said presser foot comprises a multi-needle presser foot with a series of said toes parallel to each other, said groove means comprising a longitudinal groove between adjacent toes, each said toe except one endmost thereof supporting one of said pads therebeneath to control one side of one adjacent longitudinal groove, and the said endmost toe having a lower side of each said pad.
