Description

June 4, 1968 B V I WINDOW GRILLE Filed Dec. 28, 1965 INVENTOR FORREST F. BEIL ATTO RNEYS United States Patent 3,386,219 WINDOW GRILLE Forrest F. Beil, Dnbuque, Iowa, assignor to Caradco Incorporated, a corporation of Iowa Filed Dec. 28, 1965, Ser. No. 516,846
2 Claims. (Cl. 52-456) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A removable plastic window grille for a solid pane window adapted to be held against the single pane when the grille is installed to give the appearance of an assembly of small panes, the grille is held securely in the Window frame against the pane when installed but can easily be removed toclean the window.
This invention relates to a removable window grille adapted to be held in a window peripheral member such as the frame or sash against the glass in said member to give the appearance of dividing the glass into smaller panes.
In recent years divided glass windows have become quite popular in home construction. They have the disadvantage of being more expensive than the single pane windows and are somewhat more laborious to keep clean.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A removable plastic window grille adapted to be positioned when in use adjacent he glass of a window to give the appearance of the single window pane being divided up into smaller window panes, the grille comprising a semi-rigid distortable elongated member havin projecting resilient frictional means at each end for engaging recesses in the window peripheral member or frame that holds the glass with the elongated member being bendable to engage and disengage the frictional members with the recesses when installing and removing the grille together with spaced side members each having means at one end for attaching to the elongated member and means at the opposite end for releasably engaging the peripheral member.
Other features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description of one embodiment thereof taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings. Of the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view of a window with a removable grille embodiment of the invention in its normal position. at
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged shortened vertical section substantially along line 2-2 of FIGURE 1 except for omitting the lower right side member 19 of FIGURE 1 for clarity of illustration.
FIGURE 3 is a partial sectional view showing the internal construction of the grille when the vertical or horizontal member of the grille is attached to a pair of oppositely located but linearly aligned members.
FIGURE 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially along line 44 of FIGURE 1.
The window shown in the embodiment of the accompanying drawings comprises the usual frame or sash having side stiles 11 and a top 12 and bottom 13 rail.
3,386,219 Patented June 4, 1968 Positioned in the frame 10 in the usual manner is a single or multiple sheet glass pane 14. Held in the frame 10 and positioned against the glass 14 is a removable grille 15. This grille comprises a semi-rigid vertical or horizontal member 16. This vertical or horizontal elongated member is provided with projecting means 17, here in the form of a cylinder of natural or synthetic rubber, for engaging a recess 18 in the frame or sash at each end of the member 16. In the illustrated embodiment the projecting means is conical at its recess engaging end and the recess or cavity 18 itself is conical. Each recess or cavity 18 is in a top 12 and bottom 13 rail or in the two stiles 11.
Because the elongated member 16 is semi-rigid, being preferably made of a synthetic plastic such as polyvinyl, the grille is removed and installed easily by merely bowing the member 16. In addition, the semi-flexible projecting means or conical ended cylinders 17 also can be flexed in removing and installing the grille.
In addition to the elongated member 16 which in the illustrated embodiment is arranged vertically the grille also includes spaced side members 19 projecting from the elongated member 16. Each side member has means at one end for attaching to the elongated member 16 and means at the opposite end for releasably engaging the window frame or sash. These two means are illustrated most clearly as to a specific embodiment in FIGURE 3. Thus, as illustrated in FIGURES 2 and 3, the one end 20 of the side member 19 is shaped to provide a socket 21 which frictionally receives one end of a transverse dowel pin 22. Each dowel pin is frictionally retained within an opening 23 through the elongated member 16.
The opposite end 24 of each side member 19 is provided with friction means in the form of a natural or synthetic rubber plug 25 having a rounded outer surface 26 (here shown flattened by compression) for frictionally engaging the side of the window frame or sash 10 which in the illustrated embodiment is the stile 11. As illustrated in FIGURE 1, each inner or one end 20 of each side member 19 is coped to the side contour of the elongated member 16 so that it appears to be joined thereto as an ordinary wooden window construction.
The grille 15 is preferably of hollow construction as shown in the drawings so that the hollow interior provides the socket for frictionally retaining the rubber projecting means 17 at each end of the elongated member 16, end sockets in the side members 19 for frictionally receiving the ends of the dowel pins 22 and sockets in the outer ends of the side members 19 frictionally receiving the rubber plugs or friction members 25.
Having described my invention as related to the embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings, it is my intention that the invention be not limited by any of the details of description, unless otherwise specified, but rather be construed broadly within its spirit and scope as set out in the accompanying claims.
I claim:
1. In a Window including a glass and a peripheral holder member therefor having side stiles and top and bottom rails, a removable plastic window grille positioned adjacent said glass, comprising: a semi-rigid, distortable elongated member having projecting resilient, frictional means at each end for engaging recesses in said peripheral member, said elongated member being bendable to engage and disengage said frictional projecting means with said recesses when installing and removing said grille; and spaced side members each having means at one end for attaching to said elongated member and means at the opposite end for releasably engaging said peripheral member, each said projectin means comprising a rubbery member having a recess-engaging outer end, said means at said opposite end of each side member comprising friction means for frictionally engaging said stiles and each friction means comprising a rubbery member having an outer stile engaging surface.
2. The structure of claim 1 wherein each said projecting means rubbery member has a conical, recess-engaging outer end.
