Description

XV-ILLIAM DEIRIOK, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
COMPOUND FOR ROOFING BUILDINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,725, dated September 11,1883. Application filel February 23, 1883. (No specimens.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM DETRIOK, of Indianapolis, Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Compounds for Roofing Buildings, of which the following is a description.
My composition consists of the following ingredients, combined in the proportions stated, viz: slate-flour, 'nine (9) parts; asphaltum, two (2) parts, cement or water-lime, one (1) part; coal-tar pitch,'two (2) parts; dead or creosote oil, two (2) parts. I melt the asphaltum and pitch in "a tank, and then add the dead-oil. Afterward I put in the cement and slate-flour in small quantities at a time, mixing all thoroughly till the mass is about the cloth, on one side, and two of these sheets of' cloth are then firmly pressed together to form the roofing -sheet. Sheets prepared in this way may readily be packed in layers or rolled for shipment, and will not stick together, as only the outside or cloth parts of the separate roofing-sheets touch. These sheets are then laid upon the roof, and may be secured thereon in any suitable manner, and when the roof spread over the outside, which is then coated with sand.
I am aware that various compositions for roofing have been patented and used wherein many of the above ingredients are combined, and that burlaps have been used to some extent for spreading the compound upon; but I am not aware that all of the ingredients of my composition, in the proportions stated, have been used together and in connection with cloth or paper foundations.
-What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The hereindescribed combination of matter to be used for roofing purposes, consisting of slate-flour, asphaltum, cement, coal-tar pitch, and creosoteoil, in the proportions specified. 2. The above=described combination of ma terials for roofing purposes, consisting of slatefiour, asphaltum, cement, coal-tar pitch, and creosote-oil, thickened with plasterers hair, in the proportions and for the purpose specifled.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of October, 1882.
WILLIAM DETRICK.
