Description

1957 M. J. M DONOUGH HAIR WAVING ACCESSORY Filed Dec. 27, 1955 [FIG INVENTOR. Mildred J. McDonough United States Patent "ice mm WAVING ACCESSORY Mildred J. McDonough, Milton, Mass.
Application December 27, 1955, Serial No. 555,507 7 Claims. (Cl. 132-49 These operations are usually performed by wrapping the hair in a towel or other absorbent covering which does not readily produce the required results. To be effective, provisions must be made for holding in place the set hair configurations wet with the lotions, then the drying operation combined with the application of varying amounts of pressure where required.
A primary object of my invention is to provide an accessory which is inexpensive to manufacture. It i comfortable to wear and is easily and readily applied, not requiring special practice or dexterity. It will not slip or be displaced. It permits the application of varying amounts of pressure to the head of the wearer. It retains the natural heat of the head during the process. It can also be used in conjunction with other beauty parlor operations and in the performance of household duties. It can be readily laundered.
Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear from the following description of a preferred embodiment illustrative of the invention and shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows the fabric blank from which the invention is formed;
Figure 2 shows a side view of the invention before the outer portion is folded up over the inner portion;
Figure 3 shows a side view of theinveniton with the outer portion folded up preparatory to wearing;
'Figure 4 shows a perspective of the invention secured in place on the head of the wearer.
My invention consists of a two layer cap fashioned from a blank of absorbent textile material. After fabrication, there results an inner portion covering the crown, sides and back of the Wearers head which has a transverse strip of elastic secured under tension on the lower edge which fits the nape of the wearers neck under the hair line. There is also an outer portion which overlies the inner portion covering the sides and back while the crown is open and is adapted to be closed by traction on draw strings located in a hem around the periphery of the opening. When worn the cap covers the head of the wearer with two layers leaving only the face exposed.
Referring to the drawings, the cap therein shown, as illustrative of one embodiment of my invention comprises a symmetrical blank of absorbent textile material 11 cut from a rectangle with rounded corners. The shorter sides are provided with slits as at 12-13 and 14-15 and the upper of the longer sides is provided with an indentation 16 with edges rounded to coincide with the upper rounded corners when the blank is folded on line 16-17, the point 17 being at the center of the lower longer side and at the location at which the draw strings 18 and 19 protrude. Points 20 and 21 indicate the limits 2,775,973 Patented Jan. 1, 1957 l of the crown opening while points 22 and 23 indicate the points at which elastic strip 24 is terminated and attached under tension to the material dividing it into an inner portion 25 and an outer portion 26.
The cap is fabricated by folding the material on line 16-17so that 12, 13, overlays 14, 15 and then stitching edge 16-12 to edge 1614. A strip of elastic 24 is stitched-under tension from point 22 to point 23 over edge 12, 13; 14, 15. The material is reversed and edge 13-20 is stitched to edge 15-21, allowing enough material on each fold for a narrow hem. The hem is twined along the entire edge 1521-1720-13 with a slit for tape holes provided at 17. A tape is then inserted in hem 172115-1320--17 and fastened at its center 15, 13 with free ends 17 and 18 protruding through slit at 17. The outer portion 26 is then folded up over the inner portion 25.
In the use of the cap, the opening on the crown of the outer portion is fully extended along the draw strings. The elastic strip on the lower edge of the inner portion, which is to be positioned along the nape of the neck of the wearer, is also fully extended. After the waving has been completed and lotions applied, the extended cap is carefully placed over the hair to hold the configurations in place. Without disturbing these configurations, the draw strings on the crown of the outer portion are drawn over the crown, applying pressure on the crown, sides or back, where required by the shirring along the draw string.
While the preferred embodiment of my invention has been described in detail, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the particular construction set forth, since various changes in the form, material, proportions and arrangement of parts, and in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, or destroying any of the advantages contained in the same, heretofore described and defined in the following claims.
