3 Claims. (Cl. 2-42) This invention relates to brassieres, and has for its primary object a construction and arrangement of unusual comfort.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a brassiere which does not bind or cut, yet one which adequately serves its intended purpose.
Another object of the invention is to provide a brassiere construction which will not slip upwardly on the wearers body, yet at the same time allowing considerable freedom of movement.
Another object of the invention is to provide a brassiere construction which will fit any size bust line and one wherein either side of the brassiere may be adjusted to fit the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to provide a brassiere construction which may be adapted for either evening wear or sportswear; particularly, an object is to provide a brassiere construction without staves or the like yet one which encircles the body below the shoulder blades for evening wear.
Generally, the present invention is comprised of separate and independent body encircling supports, each having a single cup and arranged whereby the band or straps encircling the body cross each other both in the front and the back of the wearer. Having stated the general concept of the invention, it will become apparent to those versed in the art that the separate sections referred to may be varied, such, for example, the present construction may be made with half cups, shoulder straps or without shoulder straps, and that the cup supporting portion may be varied in its design and construction. The following detailed description is exemplary, and has reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a front elevation of a brassiere embodying the features of the invention.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation, shown partly in perspective, of the left section of the brassiere as viewed from the back.
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of the brassiere shown in Figure 1 and modified to the extent that the shoulder straps are removed.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of a brassiere embodying the features of the invention, and showing a half cup arrangement adapted thereto.
In the drawings, the numerals 5 and 6 indicate right and left hand body encircling sections, and wherein each said section includes a front body portion 7 of fabric or other flexible material and each includes a semicircular opening in which there is sewed a brassiere cup 9. One side of each body portion is extended so as to be positioned beneath the cup 9 of the other section 5 or 6. The extension last referred to is herein described as a front strap 10 and may be of folded construction at one end, as at 11, where it is provided with a reinforced end 2,7535% Patented July 10, 1956 2 12 having eyes 13 secured therein for use in securing the respective section 5 or 6 in place.
The end of the front strap 10 opposite the reinforced end 12 is provided with a back strap 14 having an elastic extension 15 on the free end thereof. Hooks 16 are secured to the elastic extension 15 and are adapted to engage the eyelets 13 on the opposite reinforced end 12.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the respective sections 5 and 6 may be provided with adjustable shoulder straps 17, the front ends of which are attached to the upper centers of their respective cups 9 and with the extending ends of their front straps 10. Although not shown in the drawings, the shoulder straps 17 may be provided with means detachably securing the same in their described positions. Such modification is shown in Figure 3.
The form of the invention shown in Figure 4 is identical with the previously described form of the invention with the exception of the shoulder straps and the shape of the cups. This construction includes the previously described separate body portions 7, front straps 10, reinforced ends 12 on ends of the front straps, elastic extensions 15 on the extending ends of the body portions '7, and hooks on the latter. The difference in this construction is the elimination of the straps 17 together with half cups 18 instead of the full cups 9, previously described.
The length of the front straps 10 and. the back straps 14 are such that the elastic extensions 15 and reinforced ends 12 meet on each side of the wearer where the same is convenient for attachment and detachment without assuming a difiicult posture. The separate sections 5' and 6 being independent of each other provide free movement of the wearers shoulders, and at the same time each breast is adequately supported by the cups 9 or 18. Also, wire staves, stiifeners or the like are eliminated, thus, further lending to the comfort of the construction. The separate elastic extensions 15 do not restrict breathing, and the crossed arrangement prevents the brassiere from slipping upward. The natural taper of the chest aids in holding the brassiere in its down position.
The invention is not limited to the construction herein shown and described, but may be made in many ways within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A brassiere comprising a pair of separate and inde pendently movable bands adapted to encircle the wearers body, each said body encircling band including a front body portion having a semi-circular opening in the upper edge thereof, a brassiere cup secured to the margin of each semicircular opening, said bands being disposed in crossed relation at the front and back of the brassiere, and each of the respective bands being provided with cooperative fastening means for attachment at each side of the brassiere.
2. A brassiere comprising a pair of separate and independently movable bands adapted to encircle the wearers body, each said band including a front body portion having a semicircular opening in the upper edge thereof, a brassiere cup secured to the margin of each semicircular opening, said bands being disposed in crossed relation at the front and back of the brassiere, each of the respective bands being provided with cooperative fastening means for attachment at each side of the brassiere, and a shoulder strap secured at one end to the upper edge of each said cup and the other end secured to the body encircling band.
3. A brassiere comprising a pair of separate and independently movable bands adapted to encircle the wearers body, each said body encircling band including a front .g body portion having a semicircular opening in the upper References Cited in the file of this patent edge thereof, a half brassiere cup secured to the margin UNITED STATES PATENTS 01 each semlcircular opening, said bands being dispesed 1,966,174 Jones July 10 1934 in cross relation at the front and back of the brassiere,
