Description

Aug. 30, 1955 H. DINSTMAN SQUARE WATERPROOF1 WATCH CASE Filed Aug. 25, 1954 2g lg l 54 United States Patent() SQUARE WATERPROOF WATCH CASE Hyman Dinstman, New York, N. Y.
Application August 23, 1954, Serial No. 451,595
Claims. (Cl. 58--90) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in waterproof watchcases.
More particularly, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved square waterproof watchcase in which the parts when assembled tend to hold one another in moisture-tight position.
As a further object, the present invention proposes forming the watchcase with three separate sealing gaskets spaced and arranged so as to prevent moisture from reaching the watch movement inside the case.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. l is an exploded perspective view of the watchcase of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a half sectional view of the structure shown in Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the parts assembled.
Referring more specifically to the figures, the watchcase of the present invention is generally designated by the reference numeral 15.
Case has a crystal 16 with an ollset peripheral portion 17. The crystal 16 lits inside a bezel 18 which has an upper inwardly extending ledge portion 19 on the underside of which is a projection 20. A gasket or washer 21 fits between the crystal 16 and bezel 18 being disposed between the portion 19 of the bezel and the portion 17 of the crystal. The portion 17 of the crystal 16 contains a groove 22 similar to projection 20 on the bezel. The projection and groove 22 assure a lirm grip by the bezel and crystal on the washer or gasket 21 to insure a watertight and moistureproof seal at this point.
An inside bezel 23 is provided closely to fit inside the bezel 18. This inside bezel member 23 has a sharply beveled lower edge 24, a number of spaced openings 2S and shim abutment surfaces 26. The beveled lower edge 24 slopes inwardly the lowest point being on the most inwardly disposed part.
A movement holder 27 is provided with an inner opening 28 removably to hold a watch movement 29, recesses 30 and 31 being provided in the upper portion of the movement holder 27 to seat a dial 32 and the usual movement flange 33, respectively.
Movement holder 27 is made with a dependent skirt 34 which has exterior threads at the lower end thereof. The skirt 34 is recessed from the outer peripheral edge 36 of the movement holder 27 an upwardly sloping surface 37 extending from a point 38 at the edge 36 to the skirt 34.
A hold-in shim 39 having a central opening 40 lits beneath the point 3S and the movement holder surface 37 and rests on the shim abutment surfaces 26.
Fitting against the lower edge 41 of bezel 18 is a square back member 42 having a recessed portion or channel.
43 and a central opening 44 bordered by a ledge portion 45. A gasket or ring washer 46 lits in the channel or recess 43 between the inner bezel and the outer or square back member 42. The point of the beveled lower edge of the inner or inside bezel bites into the gasket 46 when these parts are forced together. This forms a water and moistureproof seal at this point.
The ledge portion 45 of the outer or square 'back member 42 is provided on its outer side or surface with a wedge-shaped projection 47.
A second back member 48 is adapted to fit inside the central opening 44 of the outer or square back member 42. This inner back member is round with an outer peripheral channel 49 and an internally threaded portion 50 adapted to lit the threads 35 and screw on the skirt 34 of movement holder 27.
A washer or gasket 51 lits in the channel 49 of the inside round back member 48 and against the outer side of the ledge portion 45 of square back member 42. The projection 47 of the back member 42 is forced into the gasket 51 when the member, inner or round back member 48, is screwed tightly upon the skirt 34 of movement holder 27. The upper or inner end 52 of the round back member 48 abuts and bears against the hold-in shim when the inner back member 48 is screwed fully on the skirt 34 of movement holder 27.
With this construction, the movement 29 is fully protected from moisture and the hands 53 and 54 can freely turn without being impeded by dirt, dust or water.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
