UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to infants cribs, and more particularly to cribs of the type in which the mattress is adjustable in elevation.
It is the primary object of the present invention to provide a crib of this type in which the mattress support or frame is adjustable in elevation to the extent that the crib may also be used as a play pen or as a dressing table or top for an infant.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a crib of this type in which the operating mechanism for the adjustable mattress frame is well hidden from View and so arranged that the general design of the crib may follow any desired pattern without regard to, and without giving any ready indication of, the adjustability of the mattress frame.
It is also among the objects of the present invention to provide a crib of this type in which the operating mechanism for the adjustable mattress frame consists of simple and inexpensive parts, and in which the mattress frame with its operating mechanism forms, together with a single member of the frame work of the crib, a unit which is distinctly separate from, and may readily be assembled with, the remainder of the crib, so that the latter lends itself to efficient mass production at low cost.
The above and other objects, features and advantages of the present invention will be fully understood from the following description, considered in connection with the accompanying illustrative drawings.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a perspective view, partly broken away, of a crib embodying the present invention; and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same crib, drawn at a reduced scale.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral I designates a crib which has for its main parts a framework or enclosure I 2, and a support or frame M for a mattress I6.
The enclosure I2 comprises, in the present instance, two end panels I8 and 2! a side frame 22 which extends between said end panels I8, and is suitably secured thereto as by brackets 24, and an opposite side gate 26 which preferably consists of two sections 28, suitably hinged to the end panels [8 and 20, respectively. The parts I8, 20, 22 and 26 of the crib are preferably braced by suitable rails 30 which are interposed between the end panels 18 and 2!] and suitably secured thereto. The end panels l3 and 20 are preferably provided with casters 3| on which to roll the crib on the floor. In order to keep the gate 2 26 closed, one of the sections 28 thereof is provided with pivoted latches 32 which are interconnected for joint pivotal movement by a link 34. The latches 32 cooperate with holding brackets 36 on the other gate section 28 in order to keep the gate closed. To open the gate 26, either latch 32 is lifted from interlocking engagement with its holding bracket 36, whereupon the gate may be swung open as shown in Fig. 1. The end panel 20, side frame 22, gate 26, and bracing rails 30 may be made from any suitable material, while the end panel I8 is preferably in the form of a relatively strong steel plate for a reason which will become obvious hereinafter.
The mattress support I 4 may be as shown in Fig. 1 and comprise a rectangular frame 40 which fits in the enclosure [2, and longitudinal and transverse supporting straps or bands 42 and 44, respectively. The'mattress support 4 may be made of steel throughout, and the straps 42, 44 may be welded or otherwise secured to the outer frame 4!]. The mattress supp rt or frame I 4 is attached, as by screws 46, for instance, to spaced arms 48 of a mounting bracket 50 which has a relatively narrow yoke 52 that extends through an opening 54 in the end panel I8, and is provided with a relatively long boss 56 which threadedly receives an upright spindle 58, the ends of which are mounted in bearing brackets 60 on the end panel l8. The upper bearing bracket 60 has an extension 62 in which is journalled a stub shaft 64 carrying at one end a crank 66 and at the other end a bevel gear 68 that is in permanent mesh with another bevel gear 10 on the spindle 58. On turning the crank 66, the bracket 50 is, through intermediation of spindle 58 and bevel gears 68 and 10, either raised or lowered, depending on the direction of rotation of the crank 66. The mattress it may thus be raised to a maximum elevated position in which its top surface 16 is substantially on a level with the top of the enclosure I2. In this position, the mattress may be used as a dressing table for an infant. The mattress I 6 may also be lowered into a position sufficiently close to the floor to use the crib as a play pen from which an infant capable of walking may neither fall nor climb.
In order to prevent the bracket 5e and the mattress-carrying frame l4 thereon from swinging laterally in the enclosure E2, the bracket 50 is provided on opposite sides of the boss 56 with preferably integral arms 86 which carry rollers 82 that ride on tracks 84 on the end panel I8. The tracks 84 are, in the present instance, formed by angle irons which are suit- 3 ably secured to the end panel I8 as by welding, for instance.
In order to close the opening 54 in the end panel I8 above the mattress 16 in any elevated position of the latter, so as to keep an infant in the crib away from said opening 54, there is provided an expansible and contractible cover 86 on the end panel [8. The cover 86 is, in the present instance, an apron of preferably strong textile fabric carried by a spring-wound rod 88 which is mounted in suitable brackets 90 on the panel IS. The free end of the apron 86 is connected with the bracket 50 as at 92' so that the apron winds or unwinds as said bracket 56 is raised or lowered, respectively; Hence, the opening 54 in the end panel; 18,- above. the bracket 50 is always closed by the. apron 86 regardless of the e1evati0n""'of 's'aid'bracket".
A hood 94 is preferably placed over the operating mechanism 58, 68, 19 for the adjustable mattress frame, and is suitably secured to, the end panel 18 as by screws 96, for instance. The stub shaft 6J1 extends through ajhol e 96- in the hood 94, and the crank 66 is preferably removably mounted on said stub shaft 64 to permit removal of the hood 94.;fr'om the end panel 18 for access to'theoperatingmechanism for the adjustable mattress frame.
It will be understood that various changes in the details of construction and in the arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the underlying idea or'principles of the invention within the scope of the appended claims, 1 i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire'tosecure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a crib having upright walls forming an enclosure, one of saidrwalls being provided with an opening, the combination of a mattress frame substantially fitting in said enclosure and extending with one end through said opening in said one wall, and a device on said one wall outside said enclosure and connected with said frame end for solely supporting said frame for vertical movement in said enclosure, said device being also operative for vertically adjusting said frame.
2. The combination in a crib as set forth in claim 1, further comprising an expansible and contractible -cover on sa'id"one wall "connected with'said frame end to close said opening above said frame in any adjusted position of the lattr.
3. The combination in a crib as set forth in claim 1, further comprising a spring-wound apron mounted on said one wall above said opening and having its free end connected with saidframeend'sdas to close said opening above said.' frame in any adjusted position of the latter.
The ghieeii a a, crib. as. t. h. in claim. 1, in whi h said device comprises an upright i jd f fe ab m un e n. a d. ne wall and threaded ly received by said frame end, and dx vin 'jmen r a d indle RQB ZR W CITED The following references are of record in the file ofthis patent U l IED STATES PATENTS
