My invention relates to a novel light shade provided with means adjustable as a dial whereb a light pattern may be controlled within definite predetermined dimensions.
In the art there are many different types of electric light shades of difierent shapes and sizes calculated to control the rays of light which come from the lamp source, to a certain pattern.
It is the object of my invention to provide a lamp shade formed from telescoped cylindrical shades with a variable opening in an inner shade adapted to register with a fixed opening in anv outer shade whereby a light pattern of specifically controlled dimensions may be simply and effec-.

The above objects and other objects to which reference will be made in the ensuing specification, I accomplish by that certain combination opening 2.
The electric light socket which is mounted at one end of the casing I, may be of conventional design as illustrated at 3. A fluorescent tube 4 hasterminal contacts 5 at the end adjacent the socket 3, and a bracket 6 carrying the return electric wire supports the connector I for the outer end of the fluorescent tube.
- Within the tubular casing i there is a telescoping casing 8 having a knurled end 9, adapted to provide a simple means for adjusting the light pattern. The inner casing 8 has an opening ID of irregular shape extending from a slot II of restricted dimensions to a widely opened part I2.
Referring to Fig. 2, it will be observed that the light pattern is controlled by the area of the space a, whereas in Fig. 1, the knurled end 9 having been rotated slightly, the light pattern is controlled by the space indicated at b.
As a bed lamp shade the advantage will be readily apparent. Another use is in the matter of controlling the amount of light to be used for illuminating a picture.
While I have illustrated only one arrangement of registering openings, which will permit the control of the light pattern, it will be obvious that different arrangements of cut-out portions in the telescoping tubes will permit various controls of the pattern of light.
The essential elements of my invention involve telescoping tubes with openings in the tubes,
which by the turning of one of the tubes with respect to the other, can be brought into a desired degree of registry. Y
I have shown the inner tube with the larger irregular shaped opening, but it will be obvious that the inner tube with the irregular opening may be telescoped on the outside of the tube which holds the light socket, and the regular opening 2 may be formed inthe tube 8 and the irregular opening I2 may be formed'in the tube I. The dimensions of the shademay be varied in accordance with the particular type of use for which the shade is to be put. The type of fluorescent tube ordinarily in use for house lighting is one inch or more in diameter, so that for such type of tube the shade will necessarily have to have a diameter larger than that of the tube. Various types of illuminating bulbs may be used, such as the ordinary electric light bulb. With such a light bulb it will be desirable to arrange provided by means of holes in the end pieces.
Electric light bulbs ordinarily give off heat so that while ventilation is required in connection with a shade for anelectric light bulb, such ventilation is not necessary in connection with fluorescent tubes which do not heat up sufliciently I contemplate that the telescoping tubes shall have a frictional fit one within the other, but it will be obvious that the principle of operation will 1 be the same whether the telescoping tubes have form the shade may claim as new and desire to secure by Letter Patent is:
