9 Claims. (Cl. 229-51) This invention relates to a package seal.

More particularly stated, the invention relates to a seal between a container and a closure or closure member therefor, such for instance, as a seal for tobacco boxes. As is well known, such boxes or packages must be sealed or the contents will dry out and not be in suitable condition for use. At the present time, packages of this type are entirely enclosed in a wrapper of suitable sealing material, but when the outer wrapper is opened the seal is broken.

Many tobacco boxes are provided with hinged lids or caps which have a fairly tight fit except around the hinges where air leakageoccurs.

This invention has for its object to provide 'a seal for sealing the closures of containers that is simple and practical in construction and is so arranged that the seal can be easily broken when the package is to be opened.

Further objects of the invention will appear from the following specification taken in connection with the drawing forming part of this application and in which Fig. l is a rear elevational view of the upper end portion of a tobacco box having a sealing strip forming a part of the seal in position thereon;

Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;

Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional elevation through the top of the box and the sealing means therefor, this view being taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 5;

Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4;

Fig. 6 is a rear elevational view of the box with the seal thereon and the Government stamp positioned over the top and ends of the box;

Fig. 7 is' a plan view of the outer sealing strip;

Fig. 8 is a plan view of the inner sealing strip; and

Fig. 9 is a plan view of the boxwith the strips secured to the faces but before the strip ends are folded and secured.

Although the invention has been illustrated particularly in connection with a box such as that used for tobacco, it should be understood it is not limited to this particular use but may be applied to any container having two separable parts, such as a container and a closure member therefor.

In the particular form of the invention illustrated in the drawing there is shown a box I0 having and or cap ll hinged to the back of the upper end thereof, as shown at II. The upper end portion of the box I0 is provided with a bead l3 which extends around the front of the box and partially around the rear thereof.

The sealing means embodying the invention consists of two sealing strips of suitable material, such as Cellophane." The-first or inner strip is shown at l5 and extends across the back of the box, over the hinge l2 and around the ends of the box, the two ends of the strip l5 being shown at i6 and I! in Fig. 2. The end portions of strip l5 which extend beyond the ends of the hinge I2 are slit, as shown at l8, topermit the lid of the box to be raised. After the strip l5 has been placed in position on the box or secured thereto in the manner described, a second strip 20 is secured across the front of the box covering the junction between the cap or cover II and the upper end portion of the box. The ends of the strip 20 are carried around the ends of the box to a position overlapping the ends l6 and ll of the strip IS. The ends of the strip 20 are shown in Fig. 5 at 2| and 22, from which it will be seen that they terminate at the back of the box adjacent the ends of the hinged portion thereof.

The strip 20 is provided with a tearing strip 23 which extends longitudinally beneath the strip 20. The ends 24 and 25 of the sealing strip may extend beyond the ends of the strip 20 and the ends of the strip 20 may be slit, as shown in Fig. 7, so as to permit easy tearing thereof.

After the strips l5 and 20 have been secured around the top of the box covering the junction between the cap and the box body a revenue stamp 30 is secured to the top of the box and extends downwardly over the ends thereof, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 4 and 6.

When the tearing strip 23 is pulled the revenue stamp will be severed and the strip 20 will be split, thus exposing the junction of the cap and the box body, permitting the cap to be raised.

However, it will be noted that the strip I! remains in position, thus sealing openings around the hinged portions of the cap and body.

Although certain specific embodiments of the invention have been particularly shown and described, it will be understood that the invention is capable of modification and that changes in the construction and in the arrangement of the various cooperating parts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, as expressed in the following claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is;

1. The combination with a container having a closure cap of sealing means comprising a strip extending partially around the container and cap at the Junction thereof, and a second sealing strip extending around the remaining portion of the container and cap at the Junction thereof and also overlapping the ends of the first strip.

2. The combination with a container having a closure cap of sealing means comprising a strip extending partially around the container and cap at the junction thereof; a second sealing strip extending around the remaining portion of the container and cap at the junction thereof and also overlapping the ends of the first strip, and means associated with said second strip for tearing said secondstrip.

3. The combination with a container having a hinged closure cap of sealing means comprising a strip extending partially around the container and cap at the hinged Junction thereof and a second sealing strip extending around the remaining portion of the container andcap at the Junction thereof and also overlapping the ends of the first strip.

4. The combination with a container having a closure cap of sealing means comprising a sealing strip extending partially around the container and cap at the Junction thereof, a second sealing strip extending around the remaining portion of the container and cap at the junction thereof and also overlapping the ends of the first strip, and a tearing strip extending lengthwise beneath the second strip and 'beyond one end thereof.

The combination with a container having a closure member, of sealing means comprising a sealing strip extending partially around the container and closure at the junction thereof and a second sealing strip extending around the remaining portion of the container and closure member at the junction thereof and overlapping the ends of the first strip.

6. The combination with'a container having a closure member, of sealing means comprising a sealing strip extending partially-around the container and closure at the junction thereof, a second sealing strip extending around the remaining portion of the container and closure member at the Junction thereof and overlapping the ends of the first strip, and means associated with said second strip for tearing said second strip.

The combination with a container having a closure member, of sealing meanscomprtsing a sealing strip extending partially around the container and closure at the junction thereof, a second sealing strip extending around the remainingportionof the container and closure member at the junction thereof, and a tearing strip extending longitudinally beneath said second strip, disposed over theiunction of the closure member and container and projecting beyond the ends of the second strip.

8. The combination with a container having a closure member, of sealing means comprising a sealing strip extending partially around the container and closure at the junction thereof, a secondsealing strip extending around the remaining portion of the container and closure member at the junction thereof, and a tearing strip extending longitudinally beneath said second strip, disposed over the junction of the closure member and container and projecting beyond one end of the second strip, the ends of said second strip being slit adjacent the tearing strip.

9. The combination with a container having a hinged closure cap of sealing means comprising a strip extending partially around the container and cap at the hinged Junction thereof, the end portions of the strip extending beyond the ends of the hinge being slit, and a second sealing strip extending around the remaining portion of the container and cap at the junction thereof and also overlapping the ends of the first strip.
