Description

Patented June 27, 1939 UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
- This invention relates to what are commonly termed concealed hinges and particularly to hinges of this type designed for use in mounting the doors of motor vehicles in connection with the body or door frame of the vehicle; and still more particularly to the construction of hook arm butts for hinges of this type; and the object of the invention is to provide a hook arm butt part fashioned from two similar sheet metal blanks shaped and secured together to form a hook arm portion of two-ply thickness with laterally extending attaching plate portions; and still further to the provision of means for reinforcing the hook arm portions where they join l the attaching plate portions to give added strength and rigidity to the resulting hinge; a further object being to provide a hinge of the character described wherein the housing butt part is U-shaped or channel shaped in cross- 2 sectional form and of sufficient width to provide a wide and long bearing of the hook arm butt in the channel of the second mentioned butt in providing a rigid and strong and durable hinge structure; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a hinge of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a hinge made according to my invention and indicating the open and closed positions thereof.
Fig. 2 is a side edge view of the hinge as seen in Fig. 1; and,
Fig. 3 is a plan View of one of the blanks used in the construction of one of the hinge butts.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing I have shown at 5 the housing butt part of a hinge and at 6 the hook arm butt part. The housing part consists, in the construction shown, of a strip of metal blanked to a predetermined contour and folded to form a central channel shaped housing portion 1 closed at the inner end thereof as seen at 8, and the ends of the top and bottom walls of the channel or housing terminate in laterally extending attaching plate portions 9. At I0 I have illustrated corrugations projecting from the top and bottom walls of the housing 1 and the plates 9 to reinforce and strengthen the hinge 55 structure. Upon a consideration of Fig. 1 of the drawing, it will appear that the housing I is offset at one side as seen at H so that the housing portion is of greater width than the attaching plate portions 9, and this offset II is apertured to receive the pintle pin or rivet l2 of the hinge. At this time it will be understood that while I have shown one form of housing butt part, other types of butts of this kind may be used.
The butt 6 is formed from two sheet metal blanks, one of which is shown at 6a in Fig. 3 of the drawing. These blanks consist of wide attaching plate portions l3 with hook arm portions l4 projecting from one edge thereof and normally in the same plane as the plate l3. The free end of thehook arm portion is apertured as seen at I5 so as to receive the pintle l2 of the hinge, and the plate I3 is apertured as seen at l6 for the attachment of the resulting butt to a support. Also extending from the same side edge of the plate I3 is a tongue or projection H. The tongue of one blank is adapted to abut the tongue of the other blank as seen at l8, note Fig: 2, when the two blanks are secured together in forming the butt 6. In shaping the blanks 6a, the hook arm portions M are bent to extend at right angles to the plate l3 in the manner clearly seen in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The hook arm of one blank is arranged directly upon the hook arm of the opposed blank and said arms are secured together by spot welding substantially at points indicated by the circles as shown at l9, Fig. 3 of the drawing, so as to securely retain the parts together in forming a unitary butt 6, the hook arm portion of which is composed of the two-ply thickness of the arms I4 arranged one upon the other,
It is also preferred that the hook arms be reinforced by V-shaped corrugated portions 20 where the arms join the plates l3 as clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. These corrugations are also preferably arranged in alinement with the corrugations [0 so as not to conflict with the free closing of the respective butts.
It will appear from a consideration of Fig. 2 of the drawing that the hook arm part Id of the butt 6 fits snugly within the top and bottom walls of the U-shaped housing I, and as will appear from a consideration of Fig. 1 of the drawing, these arms have a long as well as wide bearing within the housing I when the butts are in closed position. This will form a strong and durable hinge construction and by reason of the simplicity in the formation of the respective butt parts, the hinge may' be produced very economically.
It will be understood that the hook arm portions may be varied in contour to adapt the hinge to different movements of the door or swinging member, and the various changes in the contour of the hook arm will, of course, be consistent with the particular installations of the hinge.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a concealed hinge of the class described, a hook arm butt part formed from two similar L-shaped plates, each having a hook arm portion and an angularly extending attaching plate portion, the hook arm portion of one part being arranged directly upon and secured to the hook arm portion of the other part with said attaching plates extending in opposite directions to each other at adjacent corner portions of said parts, "the corner portions of each part where the hook arm joins the attaching plate having substantially V-shaped inwardly offset portions arranged in alinement with each other for reinforcing the arm and plate of each part Where they join at said corner portions, the hook arm portions extending from one side edge of the attaching plate portion, said side edge adjacent said hook arm portions extending to form projecting tongues, and the tongue of one plate abutting the tongue of the opposed plate in secured position to further reinforce said butt of the hinge.
2. A concealed hinge of the class described comprising a housing butt and a hook arm butt, said hook arm butt being formed from two similar L-shaped plate parts, each part having a hook arm portion and an angularly extending attaching plate portion, the hook arm portion of one part being arranged directly upon and secured to the hook arm portion of the other part with said attaching plates extending in opposite directions to each other at adjacent corner portions of said parts, the corner portions of each part where the hook arm joins the attaching plate having substantially V-shaped inwardly offset portions arranged in alinement with each other for reinforcing the arm and plate of each part Where they join at said corner portions, the hook arm portions extending from one side edge of the attaching plate portion, said side edge adjacent said hook arm portions extending to form projecting tongues, the tongue of one plate abutting the tongue of the opposed plate in secured position to further reinforce said butt of the hinge, the housing butt comprising a U-shaped body having spaced top and bottom walls arranged substantially parallel to each other and terminating in laterally extending attaching plates arranged in parallel relation to the attaching plates of the hook arm butt when the hinge is in closed position, the corner portions of the housing butt where said top and bottom walls join attaching plates thereof having inwardly offset V-shaped depressions arranged in alinement with the corresponding offset portions of the hook arm butt when the butts of the hinge are in closed position, and means pivotally coupling the inner end of the hook arm with the inner portion of said housing at one side thereof.
