UNITED. STATES PATENT QFFIGEI SAMUEL E. CHESS, OF HILLSBOROUGH, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN FOLDING SHAVlNG-HQRSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,005, dated July 16, 1878; application filed June 15, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. Grams, of Hillsborough, in the county of Montgomery and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Shaving- Horses, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved shaving-horse in position for use, one of the supporting-bars being removed. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same folded. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved shaving-horse which shall be simple in construction and convenient and effective in use, and which shall be so constructed that it may be folded up when not in use, so as to be entirely out of the way.
The invention consists in an improved shaving-horse formed by the combination of the pivoted board, the pivoted connecting-bars, the slotted board, its pivoted connecting-bars, the pivoted curved bar, the pivoted lever, the pivoted foot-board, the stop, and the jaws with each other and the supporting-bars, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents two upright bars, which may be two adjacent studs of the building, in which case B will represent the siding. To and between the bar A is pivoted the forward end of the board or table 0. To the opposite sides of the rear end of the board 0 are pivoted the upper ends of two legs, D, the lower parts of which may be connected by a cross-bar, d. To the lower parts of the legs D are pivoted the rear ends of two rods, E, the forward ends of which are pivoted to the lower parts of the bars A.
F is the board or bench upon which the article is laid to be shaved, and which is connected at its forward end with the board 0 by two bars, G, pivoted at their upper ends to the edges of the said board F, and at their lower ends to the edges of the said board 0. The board F is connected at its rear part to the board 0 by two bars, H, the upper ends of which are pivoted to the edges of the said board F, and their lower ends are pivoted to the edges of the said board (3. The bars'H are made longer than the bars G, to hold the said board F at the proper inclination when the horse is unfolded for use.
The board F is secured in place when in position for use, and its movements are controlled when the horse is being folded and unfolded, by the curved bar I, the upper end of which is pivoted to the edge of the board F at a little distance from its forward end. The other end of the curved bar I is pivoted to one of the bars A.
The rear part of the board F is slotted longitudinally to receive the upper part of the foot-lever J, so that the upper part of the said lever may pass out of the said slot when the horse is folded. The lever J is bent twice at right angles upon the opposite sides of its pivot, so that when the horse is folded the upper part of the said lever may lie along the upper side of the board 0, and its lower part may lie along the lower side of the said board 0.
To the lower end of the lever J is pivoted the foot-board K. Upon the lower end of the lever J is formed an offset, to serve as a stop to hold the foot-board K in position to be used. The forward end of the foot-board K projects and is beveled oif to strike against the stop L, attached to the lower side of the board 0, to fold the said foot-board K up against the lever J when the horse is folded.
To the upper end of the lever J are attached the jaws M, which clamp the article to be shaved against the board F and hold it while being operated upon. If desired, the jaws M may be detachable, so that they may be changed as the work to be held may require. The said jaws may also be attached in such a way as to have a little play, so that they may adjust themselves squarely to the work to be held.
If desired or more convenient, the upper ends of the bars A may be hinged to two joists overhead, and the horse, when not in use, folded up between the said joists, so as to be wholly out of the way.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved shaving'herse, formed by the combination of the pivoted board the pivoted connecting-bars E, the slotted board 1, its pix'oted connecting-bars (i H, the pivoted curved bar I. the pivoted lever J, the pivoted foot-board K, the stop L, and the jaws M, with each other and the bars A, substantially as herein shown and described.
