This invention relates to door knobs and more particularly to an improved and novel construction in a sheet metal door knob which will provide a simple structure which may be economi-,
cally manufactured and at the same time be easily assembled with other parts of the door lock or latch casing with which the knob is to be used.
In the past, sheet metal door knobs have been provided in some instances, and in order to secure such knobs to the usual spindle of the door lock, they have been provided with a cast metal core or sleeve provided with a square opening, this core or sleeve being entirely within the sheet metal shank portion of the knob. Such knobs are secured in place by a screw which passes through the shank of the knob and the cast metal sleeve into the'spindle.
In the present construction itis desired to se- 20 cure the knob shank in place by a different means,
such as by a clip or anchor member secured to some part of the lock case and projecting into a groove in the knob shank. For this purpose I have provided a knob shank of novel construction,
25 such that while the knob and greater part of the shank can be made of sheet metal, the part of the shank containing the groove can be made as a screw machine product and readily secured to V the sheet metal portion of the shank so that an 30 economical and efficient structure is provided.
One object of the invention is the provision of a door knob and knob shank of novel and im proved construction.
A further object of ,the invention is the pro- 5 vision of a door knob constructed principally of sheet metal but provided with an end portion of heavier material, such that it may'suitably engage a lock spindle and at the'same time be rotatably secured to the case of the lock.
40 To these and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

To show a preferred embodiment of'my invention, I have shown a lock having a case In mounted upon a'door II, the lockbeing provided with'the usual knobs 12 having knob shanks [3 wherein is provided a groove [4 to receive the end of an anchor member I! secured to the lock case by the screw' 16. This groove l4 extends periph- 5 erally about the knob shank so that the knob will be rotatably secured to the lock case but will be held against longitudinal movement with respect thereto- The knob 12 is preferably made of sheet metal, 10
as is also the part I! of the knob shank, which has been designated as a whole by the numeral I3. This portion ll of the shank is, as shown in'Fig.
2, flared at the end adjacentthe knob l2 and the metal displaced so as .to provide a peripheral 15 groove l8 in which may be inserted and gripped the edge I 8 .of the knob I2 so as to secure the knob to the portion ll of the shank.
The knobshank, designated generally by the numeral l3, comprises the part I! which has al- 0 ready been described, and the thimble or exten-'- sion which is secured to the end of the portion I! of the shank to project therefrom. This thimble comprises a member generally of cylindrical shape and-provided intermediateyits ends 5 with the peripheral groove. At one side of this groove the member 20 is somewhat reduced in size, the reduced portion terminating in a shoulder 2|,and the surface of the reduced portion being knurled or providedwith longitudinally extending ribs, as shown at 22. The interior of the thimble or extension 20 is bored out, as shown at 23, leaving a bottom'wall 24 at one end,.in which is stamped a non-circular opening 25 which, as will be understood, is adapted to receive a correspondingly shaped spindle, shown in Fig. 1 V in dotted lines as at 26.
The thimble 2|! :may be readily and conveniently secured to the knob shank ll by'having the re-' duced knurled portion 22 forced into the open40 end of the shank as far as is permitted by the shoulder 2 I. It will be understood that this por ,tion of. the thimble is slightly larger than the internal diameter of the shank so that when the thimble is forced into the shank, the knurled por- I machine product and the groove l4 milled in the 0 periphery thereof. This method of manufacture provides a groovehaving sharply defined walls and of constant dimensions throughout its extent so that the knob when securedto the door casing will be properly held in place by the anchor member l5. If it were attempted to spin a groove in the sheet metal portion or the knob, such a groove would not possess the advantageous characteristics just described of the milled groove [4.
-While I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that it is not to be limited to all of the details shown, but is capable of modification and variation within the spirit ofthe invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is: 1'.- 1. A door knob having a sheet metal shank portion projecting therefrom, an extension member of material heavier than the shank securedtto the end thereof, said member' -being' cup-shaped in a form, having a bottom wall with a non-circular opening therein, and having a ireduced, rportion adjacent its open end providing an exterior shoulder, and said shank being forced over the reduced portion of said extension member to abut said shoulder.
2. A door knob having a sheet metal shank portion projecting therefrom, an extension member of material heavier than the shank secured to;the end thereof, said member being cup-shaped in form, having a bottom wall with a non-circular opening therein, and having a reduced portion. 10 adjacent its open end providing an exterior shoulder, said shank being forced over the reduced portion of said extension member to abut said shoulder, and said member having an exterior groove formed thereon beyond said shoulder on 15 r the side thereof opposite the end of the shank.
