Description
y 1934- OQDALLER I 1,959,525 OARTYON Filed Oct. 7, 19:52
INVENTOR I I s w 2 ATTORNEY Patented May 22, 1934 UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE csn'ron Adrian 0. Daller, Dennisport, Masa, assignor to Dallcr Carton Company, Inc., New York, N. Y.,
a corporationof New York Application October 7, 1932, Serial No. 636,674 7 Claims. (01. 229-451) veniently and safely manipulated and which is readily manufactured and assembled.
Another object of theinvention is to provide a tight-wrapped container which will indicate to the user where to break the sealed outer wrapping in order to have immediate access to the inner closure elements.
Another object is to providea tight-wrapped container having a section removable with a portion of the outer sealed wrapping and adapted therewith to be used as a coupon; to provide such a container wherein a temporary cover is revealed by the removal of the coupon, and to provide such a container which has, itself, a
tight-sealed cover especially arranged to be broken away from its seal and to be used as a temporar'y closure.
Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises an article of manufacture possessing the features, properties, and the relation of elements which will be exemplified inthe article hereinafter described andthe scope of the application of which will,
be indicated in the claims.
For a fuller understanding of thenature and objects of the invention, reference should be had to the following detailed description taken: in connection with the accompanying drawing, in
which:
Figure 1 is a perspective .view of a device embodying one form of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view, in the same perspective, of the device shown in Fig. 1 with the wrapping broken, the coupon standing ajar; and- Fig. 3 is a view, in perspective, of the device shown in Fig. 1 with the coupon removed and the cover opened.
In the packaging of articles or materials, it is expedient under certain circumstances to encase a container in a tightly sealed outer wrapping. It is not always evident upon inspection where such a wrapping may best be broken that the closure elements, may be immediately available. ,It has been found that there, are protective advantages to be obtained by having a part of the carton cover over, before unsealing, that section of the carton which is thereafter to act as a temhinged edge to or toward the free edge of said the outer wrapping sealed. To obtain access to porary cover- The present invention provides indicia on the wrapping indicating where'it may be broken so that the aforementioned part may be lifted so as to reveal theinner cover and may, together with so much of the wrapping as 30" is attached thereto, be broken entirely away to be used as a coupon. Such a coupon is particularly desirable in. that it-is counterfeited with much difficulty. The'inner cover of the herein described device may be sealed to sealing flaps 5 in a manner somewhat similar to that described in my copending application, Serial No. 598,313. filed March 12, 1932. The entire assemblage gives a doubly protected package which is easily unsealed and readily used after it hasonce been opened. The closure element which protects the cover and which combines with the wrapping to g'ive'a novel detachable coupon is especially valuable. v
' In the drawing'the numeral 10 denotesthe inner casing of a container having an imperforate, tight-wrapped outer casing or wrapper 11. The cover 12 of the inner casing is at least in part overlaid by another portion 13 of the inner casingwhich partakes itself of the nature of a may be gripped by the hand. If that portion entirely overlies the cover, the line 14 willbe substantially in registry with that edge along which the cover is hinged. The portion 13 may be set.
off from the rest of the inner casing 10 by a scoreline 15 which may be along or adjacent that edge at which the portion is hinged. It may also be at some distance on either side of that edge, the portion then being defined as extending to the score line.
Two score lines 16, one on each side of the cover, may set off porticnsl'l' thereof which lie against sealing flaps 18 and which may extend from the cover. Atucking-in flap 19 may be attached to the cover.
The. operation of the device is as follows: The container is filled, the cover sealed to th'e'sealing flaps, the protective section folded down and the contents the wrapping isbroken at the place or'along the line shown by the indicia and the section 13 is raised. The motion of the latter may rip the wrapping along the edges thereof v.
if it has not been done before. The section 13 may or may not be removed to be used as a coupon. The main cover 12 is thereby exposed and may be gripped at its free edge and raised, tearing it along the score lines 16. The portions 17 are left attached to the sealing flaps 18. If these portions are not provided the cover may be sealed to the flaps 18 by spots of glue and unsealed by merely raising the cover. Thereafter the cover, in conjunction with its tucking-in flap, may be opened and closed at will.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention, which, as a matter of language, might besaid to fall therebetween.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

5.. In a device of the character described, the combination comprising an inner casing having sealing flaps, a cover attached to said flaps, and a section in part at least overlying said cover, an imperforate, outer tight-sealed casing, indicia on said outer casing indicatingwhere said outer casing may be broken to give access to said section, and score lines on said cover setting off areas thereof lying against said flaps.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination comprising an inner casing having sealing flaps, a cover attached to said flaps, and a section in part at least overlying said cover but not fixed thereto, a score line separating said section from the remainder of said inner casing whereby said section may be severed therefrom, an imperforate outer tightsealed casing, indicia on said outer casing indicating where said outer casing may be broken to give access to the free end of said section, and score lines on said cover setting oif areas thereof lying against said flaps.
7. In a device oi the character described, the combination comprising an inner casing having sealing flaps, a hinged cover attached to said flaps, and a hinged section in part at least overlying' said cover, an imperforate, outer tightsealed casing, indicia on said outer casing indicatingwhere said outer casing may be broken to give access to said section and in registry with a free edge of said hinged section, a score line on
