Objects of the present invention are to pro vide solid or uncut welting having substantially parallel faces and having an integral raised rib on its grain or hair side arranged between portions of one of said parallel faces; and to provide a method for making such welting.

Generally stated, the invention consists of a strip of leather having generally parallel faces and having on its unbroken hair side a rib extruded from the solid leather and arranged at an intermediate portion of the parallel faces, and the invention further consists in crowding the rib out of the solid leather of the strip by exerting pressure on the strip from two directions substantially at right angles to each other.

The invention also comprises the improvements hereinafter set forth or appearing and referred to in the claim.

The accompanying drawing illustrates one form of apparatus capable of use for the practice of the invention and in the drawing Figure 1 is an elevational view with parts removed.

A strip of solid leather, which usually comprises several lengths fastened together, and which has its flesh and hair or grain faces substantially parallel, is provided and properly dressed or moistened, and this strip is not cut or slashed. From the hair or grain side of this strip the rib 1 is extruded, or thrust or crowded or pressed out leaving flat surfaces 1 on each side of the rib. The ribbed strip is therefore a unitary or integral structure, so far as the rib is concerned, and it has not been incised. The rib 1 is produced or extruded by subjecting the dressed or moistened strip in a die, mold or former to pressure acting in the directions of the width and thickness of the strip.

Referring to the drawing, one way of doing this is to run the moistened or dressed strip through the edge guide 2, and between the spring pressed driven rolls 3 and 4, which may have roughened surfaces and of which one is provided with a groove 5, one of the rolls having heads 6 with beveled faces 7, and the other roll arranged to project between the heads 6. The space defined between the rolls constitutes a mold or former and in it the strip is subjected to pressure in the direction of its width and in the direction of its thickness. When the rib 8 is present, it rolls a stitch groove 9 into the strip and since it is substantially aligned with a portion of the groove 5, it may, in some cases, facilitate the crowding out of the rib 1. At 10 is shown the usual bevel which may be provided in any convenient manner.

It will be obvious tothose skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details of construction and procedure without departing from the spirit of the invention which is not limited to such matters or otherwise than the prior art and the appended claim may require.

I claim:

Ribbed welting comprising a strip of leather having generally parallel faces and having on its unbroken hair side a rib extruded from the solid leather and having portions of the parallel face from which said rib is extruded disposed in the same plane on both sides of said rib, said strip being pro vided with a stitch groove substantially opposite the rib and the corner ofsaid strip spaced from said rib by the portion of said flat surface adjacent said rib being beveled.
