SPINNING TOP AND HOLDER Filed -Ilay 6, 1932 INVENTOR I I Gioacchino Morini. 4
ATT NEY Patented May 2, 1933 UNITED sTATEs GIOACCHINO MORINI, F WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT SPINNING TOP AND HOLDER Application led Hay 6, 1832. Serial No. 609,610..
This invention relates to toys, and more particularly to a spinning top adapted to be set into rapid rotation by means of a pull-cord and handle member.
One object of this invention is to provide a top having a mushroom head andv a depending stem having a peripheral groove within which a knotted cord is adapted to v be detachably locked after being wound, n u around said stem.
A. further object is to provide a top of the above nature which is supported on the handle member while being spun by pulling on the free end of the winding cord 15 which passes through a passage in said handle.
A further object is to provide a top of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture,
23 easy to wind and manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance, and very eiiicient and durable in use.
W'ith these and other objects in View there N has been illustrated on the accompanying a drawing, one form in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice.
1n the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the topy n and holder as they appear in assembled po- "G sition ready for spinning.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the top detached from its holder.
Fig. 3 is `a transverse sectional View M through the holder member, with the top "a and pull-cord in wound-up condition.
Fig. 4is a plan View of the handle member and attached pull-cord. Referring now to the drawing in which like reference numerals denote correspond- 43 ingparts throughout the several views, the
numeral indicates a spinning to of mushroom shape and adapted to be helil in a Vholder member 11, and rotatably set into motion by means of a long winding pull- 5 cord 12. The top 10 comprises a mushroomshaped head 13, having a spindle shank 14 depending from said head 13. The lower part of the shank 14 is provided with a r peripheral groove 15 Within which the "lo knotted extremity 16 of the winding cord 12 may be detachably locked after said cord 12 has been wound around the spindle shank. 14, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. llhe lower extremity of the shank 14 is-rounded off and provided with a button-shaped knob 17 made preferably of metal, so as to proyde al durable spinning point for the ltop The holder member 11 consists of a handle 18 having integral therewith an annu-v 6@ lar shaped plate or disc 19 provided with a central vertical aperture 20. The annular plate 19 is provided with a small transverse bore 21 connecting the central aperture 2O with the outside perimeter of said annular plate 19. The winding cord 12 is adapted to be threaded through the bore 21 and is prevented from being pulled out of said bore by means of' the knotted extremity 16 previously referred to. The outer free end of the winding cord 12 is provided witha handle knob or ball 22 suitably attached to said cord 12 as by a knot 23, and said ball 22 is adapted to be grasped in the hand of the operator when'the top l() is being spun. 75
Operation 1n operation, thetop 10 is lirst assembled to the holder member 11 with the head 13 resting upon the annular plate 19, and the depending, spindle `shank 14 projecting Q through the center aperture 20. rIhe wind` ing Acord 12 is then pulled inwardly as far as it will go through the bore 21 and aperv ture 2O until the ball 22 abuts against the 85 perimeter' of the annular plate 19. The cord 12 may then be wound tightly around the spindle shank 14 beginning near the top of the shank v14 in close proximity to the underside of the head 13 and winding 90 helically in a downward direction. The knotted inner end 16 of the winding cord 12 may then be detachably secured to the lower part of the shank 14 by tightly wedging it into the peripheral groove 15. The toy is then ready for spinning.
For this purpose, the handle v18 of the holder member 11 will be held in the lefthand and with the right-hand the operator will give a quick pull on the button attached to the cord 12, whereby the top will be given a rapid rotary movement and at the same time will be raised above the holder member 11 and thrown free therefrom. 5 While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be `limited to the specific disclosure 4but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its s irit. In short, the invention includes all t e modifications and embodiments coming l5 within the scope of the following claim.
,Having thus full described the invention, what is claime as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
In a spinning tog', a top having a mushroom shaped ea an elongated spindle shank depending from said head, a holder member including a handle section and an integral annular disc having a central aperture, said disc also having a transverse 26 hole connectin said aperture with the perimeter thereo aV winding cord passing through said transverse hole, gri ping means on the outer end of said cor the head of said top being adapted to rest on 30 said disc with said shank projecting downl wardly through said central aperture, said cord being adapted to be wound around said shank from the top of said shank downwardly to cause a positive upward movement of the top when the cord is pulled to free the top from the holder, and a peripheral wedge-shaped oove completely surrounding the lower en of said shank for 'frictionally retaining the lower end of said 40 cord therem.
In testimon whereof, I have aixed my signature to t is specification.
