Description

March 1, 1932. E. BINNS 1,847,917
CONCEALED BATH AND SHOWER FIXTURE Filed Sept. 24, 1929 Patented Mar. 1, 1932 snnnsr w.- ienms, or noosavnm, new YORK coNcEALEn BATH Annsrrownnrrxrunn Application filed .september 24, 1929., Serial No. 394,793. j
My present invention relates to a novel concealed bath and shower fixture and more particularly to a novel construction wherein the exposed sleeve which surroundsthe valve i is readily removable, and wherein the cover plate or escutcheon is secured inposition in a novel manner.
In devices of this character as heretofore manufactured, the exposed valve sleeve-is not readily replaceable and as this valve sleeve is liable to be oxidized or injured, it should be assembled in such a manner that it can be readily removed for refinishing'or replacement.
' The escutcheon is usually either threaded on to the sleeve or else secured in place by means of a set screw. The position on the sleeve at which the escutcheon must be se-' cured to make a proper'fit with the juxtaposed is that if the sleeve is threaded the threads are often visible and if a set screw is employed with a set collar the sleeve becomes indented or marked. 1 With the above and other objects in view as will hereinafter clearly appear, my invention comprehends a novel construction and arrangement of a concealed 'bath or' shower fixture wherein the escutcheon, is adj ustably secured in position by means of. a-
novel construction of a locking device.
It further comprehends a novel concealed bath .or shower fixture wherein the sleeve:
3 through which the valve stem passes is secured in a novel manner in order that it may this embodiment is typical onlyand that the various instrumentalities of which my inven-. 1 tion consists can be variously arranged and Wall isnot a standard length from the valve body but varies in practice and the result of construction and organized, and the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organiza tion of these instrumentalities as herein set forth. Figure 1 isa sectional elevation of a cone ceale'd'bath or shower fixture embodying my invention and shown in assembled relation with respect to a wall. 7 a Figure 2 is a section on line 22 of Figure 1'. 1 3 I 'Figure 3 isan end elevation of a 'packing member, which, when in locked position,
secures the escutcheon in proper assemblywith respect to the wall. I

eferring to the drawings v 1 designates the valve casing of a concealed bath or shower fixture embodying my invention. The casing 1 contains a'valve, not shown, of any conventional construction which is controlled bymeans of the valve spindle 2'which is provided with an operating handle'a. The valve casing is provided with a packing nut 4 which apertured to receivethe valve spindle 2 andchambered to receive thepacking 5. This packing nut is in threaded engagementwith the valve cas ing and between its head and the juxtaposed portion of the valve-casing 'i's'interposed a packing: ring 6. The packing nut 4 is inindicate cor- ATE NT- ()FFICE ternally-threaded to receive aclampingnut; l v 7 'which conta'ctswith the outwardly deflected or flared'enjd 8 of the valve sleeve 9 to secure it in fixed position and at the same time to permit of its ready removal whenever itis desired toreplaceyor refinish it; 7
l0 designates the wall having an opening 11 throughwhich' the valve spindle 2 and its surrounding sleeve 9 extend. The opening 11 is covered and'concealed by means of a coverplate or an escutc'heon 12 which, as seen i V in Figure 2, is provided with an aperture13 to receive acoupling member 14 having a head 15 provided on opposite sides with flats i which contact with the shoulders 16 on the webs 17 on the inner wall of the escutcheon so that this coupling member is prevented from relative rotation withrespect to the" escutcheon 12. i 5 1 The outer end of the coupling member 14 is provided with a conical seat 18 to receive a packing member 19 which may be in the form of a split ring, as shown in Figure 3, or it may consist of any desired character of packing material. This packing member 18 is contained within a cap nut 20, the sleeve of which is in threaded engagement with the coupling member 1a so that the packing material is compressed against the outer periphery of the sleeve 9 thereby locking the escutcheon in the position to which it has been adjusted or in other words in close relationship to the wall 10.
The handle 3 is usually formed of porcelain, china or similar material and has secured toit in any desired manner a coupling sleeve 21 which is splined as at 22 to the valve stem 2. It is also recessed as at 23 in order to receive the outer end of the valve sleeve 9. The coupling sleeve 21 and thereby the handle'3 is fixed with respect to the valve spindle 2 by means of a set screw 24.
The distance between the wall 11 and the valve casing often Varies in practice and it is therefore essential to have the escutcheon adjustably carried by the sleeve which surrounds the valve spindle.
In accordance with this invention it will be apparent that the escutcheon can be moved into close contact with the wall and then fixed in position on the sleeve by means of the coupling or locking devices without marring the sleeve. The sleeve surrounding the spin-- dle can be readily removed for refinishing or for replacement by removing the handle and the escutcheon together with its locking de vice whereupon the nut 7 can be removed thus permitting the free removal of the sleeve 9 which surrounds the spindle.
The locking device is interlocked with the.
escutcheon so that relative rotation'therewith is prevented and it will be apparent that when the cap nut 20 is tightened on the coupling member or nutwhich is in the form of a sleeve interlocked with the escutcheon, the packing 19 will be compressed against the sleeve 9 so that the escutcheon is fixedly secured in theposition to which it is adjusted and the opening 11 will be. covered by the and the coupling sleeve 21 overhangs the sleeve 9. 7
Itwill now be apparent that I have devised a new and useful concealed bath and shower fixture which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in thestatetion, and while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that'this embodiment is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z.
1. In a bath or shower fixture, a valve casing having a valve spindle, a sleeve surrounding said spindle, an escutcheon through which said spindle and sleeve extend, a locking mem ber between said escutcheon and sleeve and interlocking with said escutcheon to prevent relative rotation of the locking member and the escutcheon, a second locking member adjustably carried by said first locking member, and a packing compressible between said members and against said sleeve to secure the escutcheon in the position to which it has been adjusted.
2. In a bath or shower fixture, a valve cas ing having a valve spindle extending therefrom, a sleeve surrounding said spindle, an escutcheon through which said sleeve extends, a coupling nut loosely mounted on said sleeve, extending through said escutcheon and interlocked with said escutcheon to prevent relative rotation, a packing on said sleeve, and a nut on said coupling nut to compress the packing againstsaid sleeve and thereby secure the escutcheon in adjusted position on said sleeve.
3. In a bath or shower fixture, the combination with a valve spindle having a surrounding sleeve of an escutcheon having an opening through it and opposed shoulders, a coupling member, engaging said shoulders. passing through said opening, and loosely mounted on said sleeve, means common to said coupling member .and escutcheon to prevent their relative rotation, a packing for said coupling nut, and a locking nut on said coupling member to compress said packing against said sleeve to fix said escutcheon in adjusted position on said sleeve.
